Students love the secure feeling they get by having award-winning police services on campus. However, many feel that University police are an overbearing burden on their conscience. But, more often than not, students’ perception of police usually comes down to a fear of getting caught. Students with nothing to hide are apt to have nothing to fear, while those sidestepping the law behind closed doors feel a bit wary. UVM avoids many of the problems that exist at other colleges and universities set in cities because with little crime in the Burlington vicinity, there is little to fear from the outside community.
One possible reason for an increased comfort level may be due to the President and his administration, which have increased the number of campus police. Be forewarned: The campus police are not simply rent-a-cops—they hold the same jurisdiction and power as state police. In addition, blue-lights dot the landscape, serving as emergency phones. Overall, UVM feels like a safe place. Some might feel that the police are omnipresent, especially those who get caught for alcohol or drug use, but that’s the name of the game and an aspect of colleges everywhere. But, overall, there continues to be little crime in the area.
