Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

With majestic rolling fields, golden stalks sweeping in the wind, and the Green Mountains hailing in the background, Vermont is a visionary canvas for those who love rural landscape and the cycle of the seasons. This is an obvious advantage for anyone who enjoys outdoor activities, and Vermont boasts arguably the best region on the East Coast for this. You can revel in the majesty of the Green Mountains, and the winter months give rise to the East Coast’s best skiing at Killington and Stowe—the only eastern rivals to the Rocky Mountains. The progressive community of UVM and Burlington gives a revived or rekindled sense of place, proving that big things come in little states.

Burlington is a small but bustling city with five colleges in its vicinity. As the birthplace of Phish, Burlington has an impressive music scene, drawing names like Ani DiFranco to Anoushka Shankar and genres from underground hip-hop to jazzy blues. The Flynn Theatre and the Fleming Museum add to Burlington’s flare. People are mostly out to enjoy themselves and strike a balance between work and play. On Church Street, Burlington’s downtown pedestrian marketplace, you can see a businessman bolting to a financial institution past a dreadlocked guitar player performing for extra money. There’s a little bit of everything in Burlington.

Local Atmosphere

From what I have seen, Burlington is a very laid back town. Everyone seems happy to here which is nice to see. Burlington is a small town and for someone who is used to a city and a fast paced lifestyle, Burlington is definitely an adjustment. Church Street has a lot of restaurants - especially nice during the nicer weather. Burlington seems safe but there are a lot of homeless people. Burlington is VERY outdoor oriented. The locals don't seem to mind the college students. If I have to get one point across it is that Burlington is an absolutely beautiful town with the mountains and Lake Champlain surrounding you, you will never get over the natural beauty.

Lots of Restaurants and Headshops

Burlington is certainly not a city but by Vermont standards, there's a lot going on here. Plenty of choices for restaurants and several bars and clubs. Lots of big names preform in Burlington. The big disappointment would be the small size of the town and how overrun it is by college students from mostly UVM but also St. Mikes and Champlain.

So Little to Do

Burlington is such a cute, quaint town in the summer but in other seasons it drags in things to do. When it's cold it's hard to get places and not much is going on. In the fall and spring there are a bunch of concerts at low costs but most of the bands are local or ones you have never heard of. During the night Church St. is a great place to visit a few food carts and expensive organic boutiques. The people are usually nice and the town is very safe. The coolest thing to do near Burlington is going to the Shelburne Museum which is a 40 minute bus ride from campus.
