Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics at UVA have always been huge, and almost everyone recognizes this coming into the school. Football in particular is a very big sport here, no matter the quality of the team from season to season. Going to home football games is definitely a tradition at UVA. Girls don their pearls and guys their ties before they go and tailgate on the Lawn and outside of the stadium. There is no feeling quite like the one you get when standing in the student section of Scott Stadium pleasantly tipsy on a sunny day singing “Good ‘Ole Song” after every touchdown. Some say the reason UVA has a tradition of dressing up for games is that, years ago, the teams were so bad that students felt that if the teams couldn’t look good, at least the fans would. It is an experience that caters to a variety of people, not just the avid college football fan. In many ways, it’s true that you don’t get the full experience at Virginia until you’ve been to a sporting event.

Intramurals and club sports also have a pretty big presence on campus. Almost any sport you can think of is offered. UVA students enjoy watching sports and being active. Frats, sororities, CIOs, and independents alike form teams and throw down. Popular IM sports include basketball, wally ball, and inner tube water polo. For the more dedicated athlete who is not quite on varsity level, many club sports are offered and taken quite seriously. There is plenty to find in Virginia’s athletics, at all levels of competition.

Select Success

UVA has great school spirit, but its sports teams have varied success. The lower profile sports do extremely well, but high profile sports do not.

Above Average and a Great Fan Base

The University of Virginia is known well for its high performance in sports like soccer and lacrosse. There is a large student fan base for both of these sports. The football program is known for not being top notch. Despite frequent losses, the fan base for football is still prominent. The Carl Smith Stadium is almost always filled at home games. The athletic facilities are nice, especially the John Paul Jones Arena and the Carl Smith Center. This is a school know for its academics rather than its college sports. That said, it is a high tier in many sports considering it does not place a huge emphasis on them.

Sports Are Misguided

UVA does not really have a good football team. Or basketball team. Though that seems to be the only sport anyone really pays attention to. They get all the money and they are not even really that good. I think UVA should focus more on their less-popular sports like soccer and lacrosse in which we excel!

School Spirit

UVA has great school spirit, especially at football and basketball games, where among other things you can find bodies spray-painted in orange and blue, girls dressed in their best pearls, and guys wearing orange bowties. Students at Virginia are incredibly proud of their school and like to go all-out for spirit events. In a school so thick with pride and tradition, there are plenty of opportunities to show support.

Getting Tickets

Students can get into any athletic event for free with their student ID. Everyone else must purchase tickets for the following sports during regular season: football, basketball (men’s and women’s), baseball, soccer (men’s and women’s), and lacrosse (men’s and women’s). There is also an admission charge for any ACC or NCAA championship events. The Virginia Athletic Ticket Office is located in Bryant Hall at the Carl Smith Center (off Stadium Road) and is open Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
