You Are an Adult

At UVA, you make your own decisions. If you want to party until the break of dawn, that's your choice, but don't expect sympathy if you failed to take care of your responsibilities first. The staff isn't there to be your parent and it will not baby you. It takes care of its duties and allows students to take care of themselves for everything else. It fosters a lot of maturity on the part of the student, which is perfect for a school such as UVA, where you need to learn time management to get good grades.

Campus police isn't too strict about drinking as long as you aren't doing it in front of their face and their prime concern is your safety, if anything is to happen, not snitching. With that said, drugs aren't tolerated as much, but they are illegal to all people, all the time.

UVA encourages you to be an adult, and allows you to suffer the consequences of all of your actions, good and bad, so you will find yourself treated with a lot of respect and given autonomy here.

It Is Strict but Fair

The University of Virginbia has a strict single sanction hemonor system. If a student is caught lying, cheating, or stealing they are referred to the Honor Council. If the Honor Council decides that you are guilty of the crime and intended to do the crime then you are permanently expelled from the University. However, this is a completely student run system and you receive helpf rom a perr advisor if you have a case put before the Council. Expellations are rare because people are so strongly encouraged not to engage in these dishonorable activities.

Honor Code, Honor Code, Honor Code!

The honor code system is in full control. If you cheat, you will get caught and you will get in trouble. However, since everyone makes mistakes, there are plenty of opportunities to make up for them. Most of the time, if you show that you improved yourself, the punishments are not severe. In fact, the school's judiciary system is led by students, and it is there to help improve the quality of student life in many aspects.
