College Prowler Take
Most students talk about the wonderful experiences and positive feelings they associate with UVA. The University has some of the most devoted alumni in the country. Of course, there are those who wished they had gone somewhere else and those who were turned off by things such as the lack of diversity, the prominence of Greek life, student naïvety, or the pretentiousness that is, in fact, present on campus. Those who really like UVA appreciate its traditions, the friendly and outgoing atmosphere, the beautiful setting, and the outstanding academic environment. Students definitely have their share of rough, sad, or aggravating moments at UVA, but when all is said and done, many claim that they couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. There are so many different experiences here—putting together an unorganized, student-run play with remarkable self-motivated students, studying abroad, drinking wine and chatting with a favorite professor in his/her home, tutoring at a local school, or sunning out on the lawn with friends—that, in the end, are some of the many reasons why students are happy at UVA. If you come to UVA, be prepared to take the good with the bad. In my view, the positive aspects of the University outweigh the negatives, and the environment is as vibrant and intelligent as it was when Thomas Jefferson founded it well over a century ago.

UVA is the perfect mix of academic and social elements. I have friends who will wax about Kierkegaard and Emerson, and then five hours later they’ll bong beers and slow dance. Basically, there is no better place to experience it all. If you want to immerse yourself in a difficult and complex academic world, then it is possible—the professors are brilliant and prominent. If you want to go to frat parties, football games, bars, and formals, then you can do that, as well. Plus, the campus is probably the most beautiful one around. |

I love Virginia! I’m so happy I chose it, and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. I’ve made great friends, and I have lots of fun, do well, and learn a lot. I think it’s a wonderful community, and there is a lot of school spirit and always plenty to get involved in. For me, it is a perfect mix of academics and fun. |

The school was really great, believe it or not. There’s a great party scene. Some find it too preppy, but you can find just about any sort of crowd. I never regretted going to UVA over Duke. |

UVA Is Actually What Its Cracked up to Be-- a Great School With Smart Students.
A+
UVA has a reputation as a white, preppy school where all social activity is overshadowed by the Greek scene. That's not true for the most part. It's a big school and there is great variety in the student body. As a transfer student, I was pleasantly surprised at just how motivated my peers are. No matter what your major is, you'll find that students here are ambitious and incredibly focused on making changes in the world. I've learned so much by way of my peers and the caliber of their minds. I wouldn't want to go to any other school. At UVA you work hard and end up with amazing experiences.

UVA is really big into tradition....
UVA is really big into tradition. I love the feeling that the University tries to preserve some of the best parts of its past while opening the door to new things everyday. I do not know what else I can say about UVA, other than the fact that it was truly the best four years of my life, and I will be back for many years to come. UVA has one of the world’s largest endowments—UVA alumni give back more money than most schools, which I think is a testament to how much they loved their time here! |
