Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students find that parking anywhere in Charlottesville is pretty atrocious. There aren’t enough spaces for the number of cars that are on the road already, and the University population only gets bigger each year. Many students are incredibly frustrated with the steep price of a UVA permit that doesn’t even guarantee convenient parking. The rest of Charlottesville is not much better—sometimes finding street parking is easier and safer than trying to park in your own apartment’s lot! The parking enforcers are heartless and way too efficient. If you own a car in Charlottesville, then in all likelihood, you will have some sort of parking violation added to your record during your time at school.

Don’t even think about driving to class unless you want to pay $1.70 an hour in the bookstore parking garage. Use the bus system, or better yet, just walk. Almost everything is within walking distance anyway. Try to avoid parking illegally, even for just a few minutes, because the parking enforcers will be quick to nab you. Also, be aware that special events, such as football games or graduation, can cause traffic and parking problems throughout all of Charlottesville. If you have a car, it’s good to remember these dates and be prepared.

Nonexistant Parking

Parking and even driving On Grounds is a nightmare during the school week, central roads are blocked off from through traffic and parking passes are not available for students. You can pay at the bookstore, but other than that, keep your car at your apartment.

Parking Is Hard

Parking at University of Virginia seems like an afterthought because they aren't that many places to park at all. They are in the middle of building a parking garage but that won't be cheap to use and I'm sure it is because of the football games more than anything else. If you don't really need a car, it is best not to bring one to the University. There is campus buses to get you around the campus, but it is sometimes faster to walk. As a student, you can also use the Charlottesville town buses for very very cheap if you want to go into the outskirts of town or shopping malls, which is nice but the buses if you aren't used to them can feel kind of scary.

Getting a Parking Permit

UVA parking permits are only given to faculty, staff, students living on grounds, and the handicapped. Even students living on grounds do not have an easy time of obtaining a permit—you are never guaranteed one. Rather, the permits are given out in sort of a lottery system. If you can’t get a permit for your dorm parking lot, then you can most likely get one for U-Hall (the huge parking lot next to the basketball stadium); this isn’t terribly helpful, however, as it’s far away from most things on grounds. First-year students are not allowed to have a car on grounds until second semester. Even then, you are forced to park in U-Hall—which, again, is almost pointless. You’re better off just riding the bus for the first year.
