Approximate Parking Permit CostParking Permits
UVA parking permits are only given to faculty, staff, students living on grounds, and the handicapped. Even students living on grounds do not have an easy time of obtaining a permit—you are never guaranteed one. Rather, the permits are given out in sort of a lottery system. If you can’t get a permit for your dorm parking lot, then you can most likely get one for U-Hall (the huge parking lot next to the basketball stadium); this isn’t terribly helpful, however, as it’s far away from most things on grounds. First-year students are not allowed to have a car on grounds until second semester. Even then, you are forced to park in U-Hall—which, again, is almost pointless. You’re better off just riding the bus for the first year.
College Prowler Take
Students find that parking anywhere in Charlottesville is pretty atrocious. There aren’t enough spaces for the number of cars that are on the road already, and the University population only gets bigger each year. Many students are incredibly frustrated with the steep price of a UVA permit that doesn’t even guarantee convenient parking. The rest of Charlottesville is not much better—sometimes finding street parking is easier and safer than trying to park in your own apartment’s lot! The parking enforcers are heartless and way too efficient. If you own a car in Charlottesville, then in all likelihood, you will have some sort of parking violation added to your record during your time at school. Don’t even think about driving to class unless you want to pay $1.70 an hour in the bookstore parking garage. Use the bus system, or better yet, just walk. Almost everything is within walking distance anyway. Try to avoid parking illegally, even for just a few minutes, because the parking enforcers will be quick to nab you. Also, be aware that special events, such as football games or graduation, can cause traffic and parking problems throughout all of Charlottesville. If you have a car, it’s good to remember these dates and be prepared.

It is not easy to park on campus. You can park in the parking garage or get a pass for U-Hall, but then you will need to take the bus to campus. The parking patrol is pretty diligent here, so most of the time you are not going to be able to get away with parking your car in a reserve lot for an hour or so. If you decide to live off campus and you have a car, make sure your apartment has off-street parking. Some of the rental agencies (without off-street parking) will tell you that parking is not a problem, but it usually is unless you have a spot or lot of your own. |

There is not nearly enough parking, currently, but UVA has built and is building more parking garages and expanding some parking lots. |

Parking sucks unless you get a pass. You’re not allowed to have a car until second semester, but I wouldn’t recommend one until you actually live somewhere that authorizes a spot for you. |

I won’t lie, it really sucks. But the bus system is money, and my classes were only a five- to ten-minute walk. |

Parking is tough, but everything is within walking distance, so it doesn’t really matter. The walking is really not bad. There are also tons of bus routes. |
