Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Most students talk about the wonderful experiences and positive feelings they associate with UVA. The University has some of the most devoted alumni in the country. Of course, there are those who wished they had gone somewhere else and those who were turned off by things such as the lack of diversity, the prominence of Greek life, student naïvety, or the pretentiousness that is, in fact, present on campus. Those who really like UVA appreciate its traditions, the friendly and outgoing atmosphere, the beautiful setting, and the outstanding academic environment. Students definitely have their share of rough, sad, or aggravating moments at UVA, but when all is said and done, many claim that they couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

There are so many different experiences here—putting together an unorganized, student-run play with remarkable self-motivated students, studying abroad, drinking wine and chatting with a favorite professor in his/her home, tutoring at a local school, or sunning out on the lawn with friends—that, in the end, are some of the many reasons why students are happy at UVA. If you come to UVA, be prepared to take the good with the bad. In my view, the positive aspects of the University outweigh the negatives, and the environment is as vibrant and intelligent as it was when Thomas Jefferson founded it well over a century ago.

I Wouldn't Choose It Again, but Most People Would

I had a tough time when I first started at UVA because the social scene was mostly frat parties and drinking, neither of which I enjoyed. I'm not a prude or anything, but dancing to crappy music while smushed up against a room full of 40 drunk strangers is not my idea of a good night. It took some time for me to adjust and to find other ways to have fun. I don't think it's a very diverse student body and socioeconomic status is more important at UVA than it should be.

However, I got a fantastic education and I did end up finding my own social path after a rough start. Charlottesville is a good little college town - artsy and cultural, and with enough places to party if that's your thing. Food off-Grounds is fantastic if you're willing to spend a little money, and pretty good anyway if you're a bit cheap.

Awesome

UVA is an awesome school and I would definitely come back again if I could. Plenty of things to do, and students here have a work hard, play hard mentality.

Not That Great

The business curriculum at UVA isn't setup as it should be. You can't take real business classes until your junior year, and therefore miss out on the opportunity to do internships that require business knowledge. Plus, you are constantly fretting about grades because teachers seem to be more interested in keeping the percentage of A's low than seeing the students succeed.
