Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics are undeniably a huge part of the Husky experience. In fact, outside of Washington, UW is possibly more commonly referred to by its mascot. The Huskies have quite a tradition of football, and the games bring massive flocks of students, alumni, and local fans out to cheer. Basketball is definitely growing in popularity, and both the men’s and women’s basketball teams have had growing success in recent years. Besides football and basketball, which are the most watched and talked-about sports at UW, plenty of other sports get a lot of attention and some big crowd turnout. Gymnastics, volleyball, and soccer are all popular for spectators. Crew is perhaps the sport with the most history at the UW, and every year, masses of people turn out for races at the Montlake Cut on Lake Washington.

UW sports are typical events for friends to enjoy together. Many students get a big group together and go out to cheer for the Huskies, whatever the season or sport. If students don’t participate in varsity sports, many of them play intramurals. Some students keep a very busy schedule with class and a couple intramural leagues per quarter. Most people say that being involved in intramural sports really changes their UW experience for the better. Intramurals are a great way to meet people and stay involved. Students rally around games and sporting events, and it’s definitely an experience of camaraderie and school spirit. As UW fans love to say, “Real dawgs wear purple,” and over-excited dawgs have purple and gold pumping through their veins.

Whether It's a Club Sport or NCAA, There Is a Sport for You at UW!

I've played lacrosse for UW for four years and it's been one of the best experiences in college. There is a club for anything and everything here as well as school spirit and fans for all major sporting events. I highly recommend getting involved if you go to UW, whether as a fan or a participant!

Nothing Competes!

Here at the University of Washington, sports are everything. (After education, of course!) I have a few friends who are athletes in different sports, such as football and crew. From what I understand, training is brutal - afternoon weightlifting and five o'clock am workout sessions are a part of daily live. But the hard work pays off, as the University of Washington usually ranks among the top schools in all sports. Students here love to show their school pride by attending football and basketball games and celebrating "Purple Fridays." We also have an amazing Intramural Activities Center, where all students are able to get in a good work out, swim, or even relax in the sauna!

Most Popular Sports

UW is a full-blooded football school. The student section of Husky stadium is packed for big games, and alumni return to the stadium year after year to root for their alma mater. Basketball is popular and gaining in popularity each year. This year, the Husky men’s basketball team had a lot of success and students even camped outside of Hec Edmunson Pavilion the night before a couple of big games. On the intramural front, the basketball and softball leagues attract a lot of players.

Most Overlooked Teams

Because UW tends to be focused on football and basketball, other sports do tend to get overlooked. Games for other sports (like baseball or soccer) can be really great options, and they often offer free admission in addition to free pizza and chances to win prizes.

School Spirit

School spirit rallies mainly around sports games. Huskies get completely decked out in purple and gold clothing, jewelry, makeup, and body paint to show their spirit. When UW kids get to the game, they find themselves not only cheering for a common favorite but also fostering a shared hatred for the opposing team. There is definitely no shortage of school pride at UW, but there is also a fair amount of resentment toward the UW, for whatever reasons. As with everything, there’s a large range in the student body. By looking at the population in the student section of a football game, the intensity of Huskies becomes clear. There’s a fairly large group of people who have closets stuffed full of Husky gear and devote themselves to being the first ones in line for any sporting event.

Getting Tickets

You can buy tickets before individual games, but for the big sports (football and basketball) fans usually buy season tickets for the student section well before the season starts. The most popular football package is $112 and includes all home games. You can also opt for the School Pack (four games) for $64. For basketball games, $105 will get you all nineteen regular season home games plus one exhibition game. You can also buy single game tickets for $10 in person at the Husky Ticket Office or buy tickets online at www.gohuskies.com/tickets.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Since the campus is so big, there’s a lot of space to roam around. Steven’s Way is the main road that runs through campus and makes a giant loop. Some students who jog through campus use this option. The Burke-Gilman Trail is a popular recreational trail that is easily accessible from campus.

Did You Know?
  • In 1919, UW athletic teams were called the Sun Dodgers. The mascot changed to Vikings in 1921, and then finally in 1922, UW became the home of the Huskies.
  • The Husky Fever Hall of Fame is a 5,000-square-foot display case located in the Bank of America Arena that honors UW's athletic traditions and accomplishments.
