Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Be ready for huge classes.
  • Campus is hard to navigate at first——it’s good to have a map with you at all times.
  • Career Discovery Week is really helpful no matter how old you are. The information is just as relevant for freshman as it is for seniors.
  • Don’t take any huge classes too early in the morning——nobody’s keeping track of you, and you’ll skip out a lot.
  • Dorm food is ultra-expensive. The Ave is way cheaper.
  • Dorm rooms are absolutely miniscule. Expect the worst.
  • Just because you haven’t done homework on it doesn’t mean they can’t test you on it——do the reading.
  • Know your options: Check out Early Fall Start and Outdoor Orientation.
  • Meet as many people as possible at the beginning of freshman year——everyone is friendliest at this time.
  • Rush isn’t binding. You can go for a day, then drop out.
  • They’ve got bowling!
  • Thursday is party night in the Greek system and on the Ave.
Tips to Succeed
  • Be realistic about your schedule. If you party until 4 a.m., don’t register for an 8:30 a.m. class.
  • Become self-motivated. Don’t wait for something to happen—make it happen yourself.
  • Do the homework.
  • Do the reading.
  • Enjoy your stay here because it goes really fast, and having a real job isn't half as nice as life in college.
  • Get involved: Find a club, a student organization, or an intramural sports team. There’s too much going on on campus to miss out.
  • Go to class (it gets harder in college).
  • Go to professors’ office hours. Nobody else does.
  • If you want to live in the dorms (especially freshman year), return your housing assignment as soon as possible. Competition for housing at UW is fierce, and it’s better to be timely.
  • Registration is at 6 a.m., which is painful, but it’s worse to sleep in and not get the classes that you need. Wake up, get your classes, and go back to sleep.
  • Use your freshman year (and sophomore, too) to shop around for classes you like. Don’t be afraid to take a class that doesn’t coincide with your major. It might turn into your minor, or it may allow you to realize what you definitely don’t like, which can be very helpful.

The Opportunities Are Limitless....

From academic programs such as Honors, Business, Engineering, etc. that get you involved in clubs and events, to recreational clubs, to volunteer opportunities, to internship opportunities, to incredible facilities for any need, UW has it all. I've had dinner with the University President through the Honors program, I've gone canoeing through the water activities center, I've volunteered at local schools through the "Pipeline Program," and I've volunteered in ESL classes at the university. UW has some of the best programs in the country for health, biology, and engineering. I'm not involved in any of those, but some of my friends are and they are having opportunities handed to them. It's incredible what this university does for its students.

When I had dinner with the president, he said that those are the things he most wants us to take away from the university. He wants every student to get to do what they love. That says a lot.

Dream Project, Pipeline, Carlson Center

My school has many programs available to students who want to make an impact on future college students. I am able to gain many different social and community experiences which also embraces diversity and not only looks great on my resume, but helps shapes the type of person and career aspirations I want to follow.

Beautiful Campus, Wonderful Students

I'm a theatre student, so I can mostly speak for the drama department (undergrad). It has been wonderful. You have opportunities to work with professionals from the notable Seattle theatre scene, and sometimes to work with the grad students on productions. In general, the UW campus is physically very beautiful, and the student population is generally very welcoming.

  • The Boat Races: Many students often come out to the Montlake Cut on Lake Washington for the first crew races of the season.
  • Drumheller Fountain: After Drumheller Fountain (the big fountain on campus usually filled with bird dung and other filth) gets cleaned periodically, students often go for a late-night swim and take advantage of the rare cleanliness.
