Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It doesn’t get much better. The Avenue (University Avenue) is hopping with cuisine from all over the world, with a heavy emphasis on Asian cuisine, but definitely not limited to that. The Avenue has everything from Italian, to Chinese, to Thai, to Greek, and plenty of places cater to (empty) college wallets. There are plenty of late-night and combo deals available, and most of the menus are cheap to begin with. Honestly, a four-star restaurant probably wouldn’t do so well on the Avenue. University Village is a little more upscale, but offers plenty of tasty eateries that herd in students. Several adjacent neighborhoods offer even more diverse food options, and downtown has a lot of good places, too. Seattle pleases in the food department. Students rave about the options, the quality, and the prices.

Most students won’t experience even a fraction of the potential of Seattle’s food culture. Seattle has a large Asian population, and the restaurants definitely reflect that, with a plethora of authentic Chinese, Japanese, and other Asian cuisine. There are a lot of good Mexican places, like Chipotle on the Avenue, which is famous for burritos. You could probably go to a different restaurant every night in the Seattle and the surrounding area, and not repeat for a year. It’s definitely worthwhile to get acquainted with the colorful palette of Seattle restaurants.

Lots of Options, Facing East

There are many restaurants around the UW. To the East is the U Village, essentially a shopping mall, with some popular chain "Burger Bistro" joints, like the Ram.

The West features the way cooler "Ave" (University Way, for the uninitiated), which has cheaper and more diverse fare. The most common type of cuisine is far and away Asian foods - UW's minority majority offers a constant demand. The rule of thumb I use for Ave spots is that the farther North one walks, the crowds get smaller, the clientele get rougher, the food gets cheaper and most of all better.

Eating on the Ave

The Ave (University Way) is right on the edge of campus and offers a great variety of different restaurants for dining out. There is anything from an Irish pub, to authentic Thai cuisine, to teriyaki and other Asian foods, to Chipotle and local Mexican grills, to frozen yogurt, to lots of coffee shops. Whatever you're craving, you can find it on the Ave. Prices are often average, with some very cheap exceptions (a plate of Pad Thai for $5.99 at Banana Leaf!)
