College Prowler Take

The UW creates and supports reliable and effective services, like Night Ride, a shuttle service that offers rides to students going to and from campus. Despite the precautions in place, however, there have been rare incidents of attack, rape, and other forms of violence reported around campus, and the homeless population on the Avenue concerns some students. The UWPD are a pretty dependable group, but UW’s location in the middle of a well-populated city makes it a more dangerous place, and nightfall exposes campus to some of the same dangers city dwellers experience.

Much of the school grounds light up at night for the protection of any night wanderers, the dorms are locked and secured so that only those with keys have access, and emergency phone booths are scattered throughout campus. Certainly campus efforts cannot make students immune to violence and victimization, but there are fair precautions taken against dangers, and for the most part, students have many resources to protect themselves from danger.

Security on campus is good, yet...

Security on campus is good, yet considering there is no way to separate students from the rest of the world, there is a lot of crime. It's more important to not put youself in a postion to be one of these victims. I would not recommend walking about campus alone or after dark. There are blue safety call boxes around campus with help buttons, and the UW police promises to be there within two minutes if it is pushed. Keep your doors locked to avoid theft.

Lately there has been a lot of crime near campus, although mostly coming from people outside of the student population. On campus, I feel pretty safe, though some of the surrounding areas are a bit more sketchy. The UW police department and SPD have increased their patrols of the area.

I feel like there is quite a bit of crime, but no more than the normal college campus. We have blue emergency lights that a student can walk to if they feel threatened in any way. Also, late at night we have the Husky Night Ride and Night Walk. This ensures that individuals do not walk home late at night by themselves, and it is free of charge.

Well, I can only speak from experience, but I’ve never had any problems. After late-night study sessions, partying, or anything else, I’ve never had any issues. I have heard from some of my female friends that the homeless on the Ave. are more apt to harass them.

I personally have always felt very safe on campus. There are emergency booths all over the place with big blue emergency buttons you can push, and the atmosphere surrounding the school is not threatening or eerie, but very calming. That’s not to say that crimes don’t happen, that strange men don’t follow freshmen into their halls at 1 a.m., and that people don’t get attacked, but there is definitely a police presence. I think the community as a whole is rather alert. If somebody screams for help, he or she won’t be ignored.
