College Prowler Take

Surprisingly, UW has made many improvements on campus dining in the past few years. Rhetas Cafeteria, located in Chadbourne Residential College, is the newest dining facility. It offers a wide array of food options, from its Mongolian grill and pasta station, to the salad and fruit bar, as well as hamburgers and fries. UW has made changes in its dining experience by offering more choices and taking student suggestions for what they most want to eat. Public and private dorms do provide meal plans and try to meet the appetites of their residents. Most halls will offer a variety of main entrees along with vegetarian options. Students will admit that dorm cafeterias are convenient for location, price, and student socialization.

While the food may still be classified as typical "dorm food" by some students, UW does offer a fair amount of dining locations. The private dorms all have on-site cafeterias, and meal plans that transfer to the other private dorms. Public dorms, however, vary in dining locations; some have on-site cafés and some don’t. Hours of service vary as well. The majority of the dorms have specific times when breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served and those coming in late are out of luck. For those not able to make the regulated mealtimes try the on-campus alternatives like Pop’s Club or Ed’s Express. Their hours don’t directly coincide with dorm cafés, and tend to be open later as well. Make sure to check your hall’s meal plan, though, for specifications. Overall, students generally don’t mind eating in the dorms and enjoy the variety that is offered.

The dining halls are far better...

The dining halls are far better than expected, although they can be a bit monotonous after a few months. The best of them all is Rheta's. It has everything and the students who work there are amazing and friendly. But if you are looking for something a little different, State Street is the place to be. You can get anything from Italian to Mexican and beyond. Try Cosi; it's one of my favorites.

State Street has Afghani, African, Mexican, Italian, Indian, Persian, Chinese and Japanese restaurants all overAnd there’s a McDonald’s if you don’t like culture. Honestly, the best way to experience food in this town is to just walk down the street and get a table at whatever restaurant you haven’t eaten at yet. Odds are you’ll love it, and you can go for literally a month eating out every day before you have to eat the same kind of food twice.

It pretty much goes without saying that most people aren’t going to like their dining hall’s food. Despite that, from what I’ve seen, they have decent things to eat. If you have a taste for anything at all, State Street has it.

The dining hall serves just that—dining hall food. It’s not great, occasionally horrible, but mediocre overall. The interesting thing about the dining hall is that they have cards with nutrition facts in front of whatever food you pick. That is so you truly know how many grams of fat you are taking in with your over-processed food.

The food on campus isn’t that great. I lived in the private dorms, and I heard that it is better in the public dorms, because you have more choices.

Did You Know?

Rheta’s, Ed’s Express, and Carson’s Carryout allow you to order meals online. This way you can avoid the lunchtime rush, delayed services, and a la carte lines. These dining halls even deliver at night for your late-night study sessions. Online ordering is a great way to save time, but watch out for the $2 delivery fee.
