College Prowler Take
While UW offers a plethora of computer labs and Internet access, the majority of students do bring their own computers, and suggest that others do as well. Students find convenience and safety in having a computer in their dorm room. This way, they can do their papers at their leisure, download music, and keep documents in a secure place. The dorms and private halls offer high-speed DSL in each room, along with small computer labs within the building. These smaller labs are nice if your computer is malfunctioning, or your printer runs out of ink and you’re on a deadline. Be warned though—these smaller labs will often be crowded, and sometimes charge to print. For those not able to bring their own computer, UW offers numerous labs spread all over campus. In order to meet the varying schedules of students, some open as early as six in the morning, while others stay open past midnight. All computer labs provide PC and Mac consoles so that students can use the programs they are most familiar and comfortable with. Furthermore, each lab is equipped with word-processing programs, Internet access, and research outlets. Along with these basic programs, the labs also provide printers, scanners, and copiers. For more specific computer hardware or software needs, check out the lab directory to find the right location.

We are a well-funded university, so we have tons of computer labs. Don’t worry about finding one, especially if you live in the University dorms freshman year. All of them are equipped with computer labs either right in the building or below the cafeteria. |

I would suggest bringing your own computer out of convenience. The labs are usually only crowded during exam times. The computer labs in the private dorms are never crowded, and you also get free Internet in your room, so it was worth it to have a computer. |

There are tons of computer labs on campus, and I’ve never not been able to get one if I needed to. The dorm network is great, and the off-campus cable and DSL are easily available. |

Computer labs are busy, but you...
Computer labs are busy, but you can pretty much always find a computer. The large majority of people have their own computers, so that is good too. I had one and it worked out well, but it really doesn’t make that much of a difference either way. |

If you have your own computer, you might as well bring it. When you live in the dorms, it is so easy to access the Internet and check your e-mail with the Ethernet connection. If you do not bring your computer, that’s fine. There are plenty of computer labs and libraries all over campus. But I highly recommend bringing your own. |
