College Prowler Take
While Greek life is alive and thriving at UW, it is not a dominating life force. Most of the students affected by the Greek system are members of a fraternity or sorority. For these students, the lifestyle of the Greek can be a little overwhelming. If nothing else, students feel their experience in this system has helped them meet a lot of interesting people. While the sororities and fraternities do offer plenty of socialization, students don’t feel it is the only way to meet people at UW. UW is home to nearly forty sororities and fraternities. While some are geared towards its members being of a certain ethnicity or academic field, they all offer a strong social aspect. Those in the Greek system often partake in intramural events, fundraising nights, and volunteer activities. Furthermore, the Greek System is not totally exclusive. Even if students are not a part of a frat or sorority, they are usually welcome at most of their parties or other social events.

Greek life does not dominate the social scene. However, if you choose to become part of the Greek system, it may come to dominate your social scene. Once in the Greek system, most of those in sororities or fraternities end up spending large amounts of social time with others in fraternities and sororities. |

Greek life is fun, probably because I’m in a sorority. I’m in Delta Delta Delta and I love it, love it, love it. About 10 percent of students are in the Greek system. Depending on where you live freshman year, you will see more or less Greeks. If you live in University housing, you will probably go to more house parties than frats because of the longer walk. If you live in private housing, you go to more parties at the frats. I lived at the Langdon on Langdon Street, which is where most of their houses are. I love the Greek system, and I recommend at least checking it out if you are somewhat interested. |

Greek life is loud and shiny. Most people’s first few parties up here are at frats. Unless you want to join a frat or a sorority or have friends in them, it’s very easy to find social scenes where Greek life is barely present. I’m really not kidding when I say you can find a group of people for just about anything you want or are interested in at this place. |

Did You Know?An average of 10 percent of the undergraduate population is a member of the Greek system. This statistic holds true for the freshman population as well.
The Greek system was set in place only a few years after the university opened, making it one of the oldest established systems associated with UW.
Apart from house parties, the societies do host fundraising, intramural sporting, and academic events.
