Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Location plays a large role in how students perceive safety at UW. Certain areas are a little less safe than others are, and students try to steer away from these. In general, students feel safe walking around campus, State Street, and near the dorms. Madison police along with Campus Police further ensure the safety by patrolling the campus and its surrounding areas. Furthermore, the more extreme crimes and incidents seem to take place farther from campus, and don’t usually involve students.

Madison in general is a pretty safe city. Statistically, most criminal offenses fall into the larceny and theft category. Furthermore, the city generally falls under the national numbers for crime rates. Even so, common sense must be used when it comes to safety and security issues. UW offers numerous safety programs to assist individuals in certain situations. For example, students can call a free cab service to safely bring them home, or request an escort to walk them to their cars at night. The campus also has lit pathways throughout campus and emergency phones near the academic buildings.

Safety Level Depends on Location

Personally, I have not encountered any threats to my safety while on campus. I feel perfectly safe walking to and from the library on my own even at night. For those who feel more comfortable traveling in groups, the university has the SAFE program which consists of students who volunteer to walk others back to their homes, a late night taxi service, and various buses operating across campus. The University Police Department is also a constant presence on campus, especially in the more populated areas. I have heard that Madison has a heroin use problem, however, I myself have not witnessed any sort of drug sale or use. It truly depends on where you live and who you associate yourself with.

Campus Safety

I have never felt unsafe in Madison, but you still have to be smart. I live in the city like area, and as a girl it is not smart to walk alone. If you use common sense, you should be fine.

University Protection

Coming from a big city, I never feel afraid walking alone on campus during the nighttime. However, if it is really late there are SafeRide and SafeWalk programs where you can get a free taxi ride or have two people walk home with you. If you use the programs provided by campus you will not find yourself in a dangerous situation on campus. Personally, I have never met anyone who has fallen victim to any sort of crime while at Madison.

Facts

Did You Know?

College freshmen living in dorms are nearly four times as likely as other undergrads to contract bacterial meningitis, a potentially fatal disease which causes inflammation of the linings of the brain and spinal cord. If you plan on staying in the residence halls as a first-year student, the FDA and University Health Services highly recommend that you first receive the meningococcal vaccine Menactra.
