Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Athletic event tickets sell out fast.
  • Bascom Hill is not really a hill but more of a huge upward incline. The walk up it sometime requires an intense amount of energy, especially at eight in the morning. It is rumored to be 1/100 of the slope of Mount Everest.
  • Don’t forget an umbrella and rain boots!
  • The Lakeshore path is an alternative to taking Bascom Hill.
  • The school provides you with a free bus pass for the city bus system.
  • The winters in the Midwest are as cold as people say, so come prepared.
  • There are tons of student organizations, so join one!
Tips to Succeed
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether this falls into academics, personal issues, or career choices, UW offers many support systems. Advising counselors are always willing to discuss classes and other school-related issues. UHS also provides services for more personal problems, and of course physical health concerns.
  • Get involved! There are so many organizations and extracurricular activities on campus, it’s easy to find one that fits your interests. They are a great way to learn new skills and meet new people. These organizations can be great ways to build a resume or just to relax after a hard week of school.
  • Try to stay organized. Whether it’s keeping separate folders for different classes or having files for work, school, or extracurricular activities-staying organized will make keeping deadlines and staying on top of assignments so much easier.
  • UW is academically challenging, so try to stay focused. With all the other opportunities and experiences involved with a college, it is often hard to maintain your grades. If you find yourself faltering academically, try very hard to mend the problem, and fast. Once you are behind it can be quite difficult to catch up again.

College Sports Town Central

One huge difference between Madison and most schools are the sports teams. Out football team has made it to the Rose Bowl two years in a row now, and our basketball team almost always makes the NCAA March Madness tournament. It really helps increase the school spirit at Madison and it's pretty awesome to go to some of the huge games.

My school will give any new student a great experiences through there whole school years. We have plenty place where you can study and party. All the computer is are Macs but you can switch programs either from Macs or Windows. The night life is amazing on state street. Everyone goes wild and out. The best time of year is Halloween when everyone from all over Wisconsin comes and party here in madison and its called Freak Fest.

Facts

Traditions
  • Farmers Market: The farmers market is open Saturday morning till 2 p.m. Farmers and other sellers set up stands around the Capitol. It's a huge draw for students and the community alike, and a great place to buy fresh produce, bread, plants, desserts, or other assortments of goodies at reasonable prices.
  • Halloween on State Street: A weekend filled with music, costumes, and alcohol. Students pay to go on State Street dressed in their costumes. It's the largest campus party of the year.
  • Mifflin Street Block Party: Thousands of students come to Mifflin as residents open their homes and liquor cabinets. Entertainment usually provided as well.
  • Picnic Point: One of the best hookup spots according to students. A beautiful 3-mile walk on Lakeshore path leads to a fire pit and benches overlooking the middle of the lake.
  • Sledding on Liz Waters: Winter is not complete without having at least once gone sledding on a cafeteria tray on either Liz Waters or Bascom hills.
Urban Legends
  • Rumor has it that studying at the Helen C. White Library will ultimately lead to finding your soul mate. Rated the number one hookup spot by students, thus ensuring that ‘studying’ isn’t always hard work.
  • The Lakeshore path is very scenic and great to walk down, but students are wary of it at night; rumors of crimes and sexual assault has led to the nighttime nickname of “rapeshore path”.
  • There is a rumored tradition of some freshmen touching the Lincoln statue's hand or foot before their first classes on campus or before big tests, and of other students sitting in Lincoln’s lap after graduation for good luck. Most students generally climb up on his lap at least once in their college experience.
