College Prowler Take
Location plays a large role in how students perceive safety at UW. Certain areas are a little less safe than others are, and students try to steer away from these. In general, students feel safe walking around campus, State Street, and near the dorms. Madison police along with Campus Police further ensure the safety by patrolling the campus and its surrounding areas. Furthermore, the more extreme crimes and incidents seem to take place farther from campus, and don’t usually involve students. Madison in general is a pretty safe city. Statistically, most criminal offenses fall into the larceny and theft category. Furthermore, the city generally falls under the national numbers for crime rates. Even so, common sense must be used when it comes to safety and security issues. UW offers numerous safety programs to assist individuals in certain situations. For example, students can call a free cab service to safely bring them home, or request an escort to walk them to their cars at night. The campus also has lit pathways throughout campus and emergency phones near the academic buildings.

I personally have not had any issues with security, and Madison itself really hasn’t either. Campus and dorm security itself is very efficient as well. |

I walked into this college with people telling me Madison is the one of the safest cities in the US. I realized later that this doesn’t mean its 100 percent safe. If you have a bike, own a bike lock. Lock your door before you go out. I think that because theft happens so rarely, people are left off-guard, and lulled into a false sense of security. |

I have never felt unsafe at anytime in Madison. But at the same time, I have always stayed in the downtown Madison area. I would also assume that being a male might have something to do with it. I have never felt unsafe walking alone late at night, but out of common sense, I would not encourage traveling alone late at night, especially for females. |

The campus police are really prevalent, and I’ve noticed emergency phones on street corners, too, which are for immediate trouble. Every once in a while, you read in the papers about a sexual assault, but I think if you are smart and don’t put yourself in a bad situation, then you’ll have no problem at all. |

Honestly, although it seems to be a flawed security system, the bigger problems tend to happen outside of campus-patrolled areas. |

Did You Know?College freshmen living in dorms are nearly four times as likely as other undergrads to contract bacterial meningitis, a potentially fatal disease which causes inflammation of the linings of the brain and spinal cord. If you plan on staying in the residence halls as a first-year student, the FDA and University Health Services highly recommend that you first receive the meningococcal vaccine Menactra.
