Quick StatsBest Ways to Get Around Town
- many students get around by bike. There are bike lanes designated on the street. Bike racks are located by every building and residential hall. Students can also use Lakeshore path to bike on.
- Many students have mopeds, and moped parking is available in front of every building and residential hall. A moped is a quick, convenient way to get around campus.
- To get to the mall or movie theater, most students take the bus. However, buses make frequent stops and to get to the mall, buses stop at the West Transfer Point first, which can be a wait of 5-15mins for the next bus.
- Walking- most students walk everywhere. Campus can be quite large, but everything is within reasonable walking distance.
How to Get to the Airport
- There is not a shuttle available to get to the airport. However, most students take a cab for around $20, or have a friend who is willing to take them there.
College Prowler Take
Students feel pretty content with the various transportation options at UW. The shuttle bus is probably one of the more popular options. Students are able to take this up the ominous Bascom Hill, and around to the farthest academic building on campus. The bus runs about every fifteen minutes beginning at 7 a.m., and goes till 11 p.m. In general, most places on campus or off are within a walking distance. However, UW and the city of Madison offer ways for students to go farther distances in shorter amounts of time. Therefore, public transportation is very accessible. As a student, you get a free bus pass that is good through the semester. As long as you can read a bus schedule, you are good to go. Lots of people use the busses to get to campus, go to the mall, or catch a movie. There is also a free bus that circles the campus to take students to academic buildings that are a little farther away. Madison also has an abundance of cabs that are more than willing to drive you anywhere. Of course, they are more expensive than the buses, but when you have bags of groceries, it’s worth it. Madison also offers ways to get out of the city or state. The airport is only a few miles from campus, as is the Greyhound bus station. Travel agents are also available to help students plan getaways. Bottom line is that wherever you may need to go, there will be some means of getting you there.

Public transportation is never convenient, and most of the time, it pays just to walk. However, in the extreme heat or cold, there is a free bus that runs up Bascom every few minutes. If someone really wanted to take the time, they could try to get to the west or east side taking the bus, but it would double travel time. |
