  • many students get around by bike. There are bike lanes designated on the street. Bike racks are located by every building and residential hall. Students can also use Lakeshore path to bike on.
  • Many students have mopeds, and moped parking is available in front of every building and residential hall. A moped is a quick, convenient way to get around campus.
  • To get to the mall or movie theater, most students take the bus. However, buses make frequent stops and to get to the mall, buses stop at the West Transfer Point first, which can be a wait of 5-15mins for the next bus.
  • Walking- most students walk everywhere. Campus can be quite large, but everything is within reasonable walking distance.
Best Ways to Get to the Airport There is not a shuttle available to get to the airport. However, most students take a cab for around $20, or have a friend who is willing to take them there.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students feel pretty content with the various transportation options at UW. The shuttle bus is probably one of the more popular options. Students are able to take this up the ominous Bascom Hill, and around to the farthest academic building on campus. The bus runs about every fifteen minutes beginning at 7 a.m., and goes till 11 p.m.

In general, most places on campus or off are within a walking distance. However, UW and the city of Madison offer ways for students to go farther distances in shorter amounts of time. Therefore, public transportation is very accessible. As a student, you get a free bus pass that is good through the semester. As long as you can read a bus schedule, you are good to go. Lots of people use the busses to get to campus, go to the mall, or catch a movie. There is also a free bus that circles the campus to take students to academic buildings that are a little farther away. Madison also has an abundance of cabs that are more than willing to drive you anywhere. Of course, they are more expensive than the buses, but when you have bags of groceries, it’s worth it. Madison also offers ways to get out of the city or state. The airport is only a few miles from campus, as is the Greyhound bus station. Travel agents are also available to help students plan getaways. Bottom line is that wherever you may need to go, there will be some means of getting you there.

Buses Are the Best

Travelling around Madison is very easy. Our segregated fees pay for bus passes that allow us to get on any bus in the city for free. There are special buses that through campus, and they run at night so that students have a safe way of getting home after parties. There are coach buses that leave from the Memorial Union several times a day that go to Milwaukee, the twin cities, Chicago, and everywhere in between. Tickets on these buses are free with a student ID. There's also a regional airport on the east side of Madison that flies all over the country.

Convenient Enough. Hey, It's Free.

Students are provided with a bus pass as part of tuition so no complaints there. There are plenty of different routes so you're bound to find your way to where you need to be eventually. Buses are often late, though I've actually missed buses because they were early which is kind of ridiculous. Some bus drivers clearly have little desire to show some compassion as they often pull away from the stop and close the door even if they see someone running. Now that sucks.

Bus Pass Included

I really love that the buss passes are included in the student fees. Since they are at a discount rate we don't have to buy the normal passes. You can pretty much get anywhere on the bus. It is sometimes frustrating that it is so hard to keep a car on campus though. I would like one, but it would be too pricey.
