The freshmen interest groups are a chance to meet people in the same field as you. They are optional and have mixed reviews. It depends on how interested you are to live on the same floor and participate more commonly in activities with people from your field.
I did not do a FIG this year and I kind of regret it because you end up having many classes with people in your major who are in the FIG and they all know each other pretty well and many are friends. It is a great way to meet new people who have many of the same goals and interests as you. Ultimately either way you go, FIG or no FIG, the dorms are not bad.
The outdoor programs are always putting on events. Laramie is a great place to get out an explore and meet new people at the same time.
If you can join a FIG definitely do it! It helps so much! I regret not joining the FIG for my major, because everyone else in the FIG is so much more prepared than I am. They are also a lot closer to the advisors and specific professors.
