Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Ursinus offers many incredibly challenging fields of study, and students often dig deep into their reserves to think critically about the problems professors give them. Ursinus College is one of the top undergraduate schools for research, and it has remarkable science professors. But don’t worry—other departments are not neglected in favor of the sciences. History, English, and the arts all play a role in shaping the campus. Students work very hard to achieve good grades but not to the point of vicious, cutthroat competition that is seen at other schools. If anything, Ursinus students seem to be united, working together to overcome the academic obstacles thrown their way.

Academics are the College’s strong point. The faculty is genuinely concerned with the students, and the teachers are extremely dedicated to their particular fields of study. Each professor is required to take a sabbatical every once in a while to rededicate themselves to their specialty and focus on what they are passionate about. Their exuberance rubs off on students, making everyone here want to constantly achieve more. Ursinus students work very hard and learn a tremendous amount in four short years.

The best part of Ursinus College

The B&E (Business and Economics) department is fantastic, assuming you aren't stuck with an adjunct professor which seem to be becoming more frequent. The professors are fair, great teachers, available and for the most part not that challenging. This is a department where you can learn a lot and still come out with a great GPA!

The political science department shines as one of the best departments outside of the sciences. The teachers are incredibly smart and help you learn a lot, however unlike the B&E department, this major is incredibly challenging at Ursinus. You will learn a lot but if you plan on graduating with a 4.0 major GPA, you will have to work hard or go to a different schools. Some professors in this department seem to be morally opposed to giving A's. . .

Overall, most professors are phenomenal and the small discussion based classes are a lot of fun. On one hand its great to get a grade boost for participation and be able to ask a million questions in class but on the other hand, don't think you can skip out on classes. Small class sizes reveal any frequent skippers and a good portion of professors will enforce the absence policy (Miss more than 5 classes and you are in danger of failing). If you like great professors and individual attention with good discussion, Ursinus is the place for you!

Okay Academics

Ursinus offers an intimate setting where you really get to know your professors if you put in the effort. I can talk to mine about anything from classes to what clothes to buy for vacation. The science facilities are great, but the reason for a lower rating is the availibility of classes. Often times the bio classes you want are full, hence why I am taking only environmental classes this semester because I was unable to get into any bio applicatible to my career. Also problematic is the general majors here, there is no ecology or marine biology, somethign I wish I had considered when applying.

Art Department Is Disappointing

The sculpture professor is disrespectful and shows little interest in the well-being of her students. Be wary of taking a class in this department.
