Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics usually take a backseat to academics, but Ursinus students certainly play hard. There is a lot of participation in sports, and unlike certain Division I schools, most athletes here are intelligent off the field as well. The Centennial Conference, which includes like-minded schools such as Franklin & Marshall, Dickinson, and Swarthmore, ensures that Ursinus athletes always have a chance to compete. The football and basketball teams are big crowd draws and are fun to attend. There is usually a small, passionate crowd of followers who make it a point to raise spirit. However, the general school spirit regarding athletics is a bit low. Very few non-athletic students can tell you when the next match is or what the score of the previous game was. On the plus side, this makes it very easy to attend games and get good seats.

Intramural sports are very popular. Perhaps it is because there is less pressure to succeed and more incentive to have fun, but whatever the case, students are more willing to play intramurals than varsity. There is a fair amount of variety in the sports offered (heck, we even have a dodgeball league), so intramurals are a popular athletic choice for students.

Not to Shabby for a School of 2,000

Our small school takes a lot of pride in sports. In fact, a lot of student athletes are also majoring in Exercise Sports and Science. A majority of students are involved in sports and those who are not definitely come out to support their friends who are. The facilities take up a majority of the campus and the coaches are as dedicated as they are genuine.

Sports at Ursinus receive a pretty good following because you usually know at least one person on the team. The facilities are really nice and are never limited to just athletes. We are D3, so academics always come first. We aren't always the best at sports, but we try hard.

Most Popular Sports

Men’s basketball, football, and women’s rugby are very popular sports to attend.

Most Overlooked Teams

The team that probably gets the least respect is gymnastics, which usually performs very well. The field hockey team is always fun to watch but does not get as great of a turnout as some of the other teams.

School Spirit

Ursinus students have a weird sense of school spirit. Most seem to genuinely love the school but sometimes have a strange way of showing it. They complain a lot about the quality of certain things (such as the food), and some claim there is a departmental bias toward the sciences. But, if an Ursinus student is asked whether he likes the school, he will usually say yes. For most students, despite Ursinus’ few drawbacks, coming here was probably the best decision they’ve made. This feeling is especially noticeable when they talk about the College. Almost every student on campus has at least one item of clothing with “Ursinus” on it.

Getting Tickets

Most games are free except for occasional fundraisers, which are well advertised and easy to get tickets for.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The Perkiomen Trail practically runs through the campus’ backyard. It’s one of the finest trails in the area, and it leads
to Philadelphia.
