College Prowler Take
The Ursinus laptop initiative is the driving force behind computing on campus. Since its introduction in 2000, it’s been a powerful addition to the College. What’s more is that at the end of sophomore year, each student trades in his or her laptop for a brand new one. There is also a buyback option if students don’t want to part with their beloved computer. If anything goes wrong with your laptop while you’re here, the computer service center on the third floor of Myrin Library can help you out. Although having good computer labs on campus would be nice, it is irrelevant because every student has a laptop. And since the campus is becoming increasingly wireless, it makes Internet access all that much easier. However, those who try to use certain file-sharing Web sites will be disappointed, since there are firewalls in place that restrict the speed of downloading. But students are savvy enough to find downloading programs that aren’t affected, so it’s usually not a problem. There is also a U-drive, in which students can share anything they want with the whole campus, but it is closely monitored, so you will be let down if you attempt to find cheat sheets or pornography on there. On the whole, students are very reliant on the laptops and printers they receive and use them for school work as well as recreational stuff, such as instant messaging.

“At Ursinus, all of the students are given a laptop when they begin their freshman year, and they turn it in for a new one before junior year. I find that the laptop program helps alleviate a lot of the problems that come from fixing laptops and giving out loaners because since everyone has the same one students know how to work on everyone else’s computers.” |

“The laptops are great! The only thing I don’t like is that the buyback option is a little pricey. I would like to keep my laptop, but the price to buy back is a bit high. I could probably get a brand new laptop for that price.” |

“The computer labs suck, but that’s because the college gives us laptops and printers. The laptops are good enough, although I’ll get the ‘blue screen of death’ occasionally, and computer services is not very helpful.” |
