Ursinus College - DiversityCollege Prowler1.93
Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
The opinions on diversity are, fittingly enough, pretty diverse. But the numbers at the beginning of this chapter show that Ursinus College is really not that diverse. It is a largely white school, but there is enough diversity within the student population to be noticed. Despite the students’ tendency to segregate themselves, there have been few reports of racism, though those few have been notable, such as the drawing of a swastika on a freshman’s door. The neighborhoods surrounding Ursinus are fairly diverse as well. Collegeville is just like Ursinus—predominantly white—but Norristown is nearby, which has a large population of African Americans. Most of the diversity at Ursinus stems from the fact that there are many students from different states. While this may not sound like much, there have been many debates over whether New Jersey should be annexed to Pennsylvania, and so forth. While such debates are usually in good humor, it does highlight the differences between each state. On the whole, however, diversity is generally ignored. While the admissions office tries to make a point by claiming how “diverse” Ursinus is, it hardly affects students’ daily lives.

“The campus is very economically diverse. It is somewhat ethnically diverse. Politically, it is very diverse. Everyone is different at Ursinus, but we all get along. Diversity isn’t a problem.” |

“Economically, the majority of the people are in the upper-middle or upper-class because it is such an expensive school, but there are some exceptions to that because large scholarships are given out. Ethnically, I would say that there are different races represented, but probably not to the extent of other schools. Politically, I would say that there is a pretty even split, though it is not a major issue for most people.” |
FactsEconomic Status
Ursinus students are very diverse in this regard. There are wealthy, not-so-wealthy, and middle-class students all co-existing on campus. Economic status has very little, if any, relevance on campus.
Gay Pride
Thanks to the Gay Straight Alliance, gay tolerance and acceptance is usually the norm, although there have been a few recent incidents of graffiti containing hate messages. The one major activity of the year is the Day of Silence, held by the alliance, in which hundreds of students spend a day in silence to recognize and protest the silence that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people face each day.
Minority Clubs on Campus
There are quite a few minority clubs, focusing on everything such as sexual orientation, ethnic background, and religious and political differences. Diversity is a key word thrown around a lot. However, for as many different clubs that we have, there are very few major events held each year, with the notable exception being the Tour of Asia held by the Southeast Asian Student Association (SASA). The three major minority organizations are the Association of Latinos Motivated to Achieve (ALMA), Sankofa Umoja Nia (SUN), and SASA.
Most Common Religions
Christianity, Judaism
Political Activity
Political activity is a strange animal on campus. The College has more than its share of liberal groups willing to make statements the first chance they get, but there is also a fairly strong conservative presence, as well. There are not too many demonstrations or protests. Usually political activity is quiet, and students usually only get into an uproar about campus-related things. However, there was a recent push to get students registered to vote, and about 200 students did.
