Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greek life is a huge part of campus, and it seems to dominate the social scene. Greeks almost exclusively throw all on-campus parties. Students wearing Greek letters is a common sight, and fraternity/sorority exclusion becomes most obvious at Wismer during dinner—the frat guys and sorority sisters sit at certain tables every night. But it’s not necessary to be Greek to fit in. While a third of the campus is a member of a Greek organization, one must remember that this is a small school. It’d be nearly impossible to avoid befriending someone who is not a Greek. Therefore, most parties are not exclusive, and non-Greeks can get into them quite easily. There are a few exclusive parties, but those are usually rare.

A few non-Greeks view frats and sororities as a stain on the Ursinus landscape, but generally, most students don’t seem to mind. After all, a lot of the Greek organizations participate in campus life. A few are involved with community service; others provide services such as flowers for Valentine’s Day or stress-busters during exams. Most Greek organizations actively try to have a positive influence on campus life, so non-Greeks usually tolerate their presence.

Half and Half

Most of the parties are hosted by the Greek Life, except in Reimert where sports teams act like their own forms of frats/sororities. It doesn't really matter whether your involved or not, there is not much elitism associated with being Greek or with not being Greek. For the most part, Greek parties are open to the campus.

Greek Life

From my knowledge and experience Greek Life is small and seems to be somewhat competitive among the Greeks. They host a few events on campus here and there but nothing that have made me extremely interested. Some Greek housing is available I believe. Non-greek do not show any intimidating expression towards the Greeks.

Greeks Are Involved

The Greeks do not get enough credit at Ursinus. They are involved in everything. There are a few people that do not, but most of the time the Greeks are involved in many activities. Also, if you walk on the campus the letters are everywhere. Non- Greeks do not normally try to understand. A lot of people generalize and the administration wants to get rid of it. However, since Greeks actually do a lot on campus and actually force members most of the time to do community service and to better themselves, I think it would be a bad idea.

Did You Know?

Greek Week is held every year as a chance for Greek organizations to show off their pride before new member initiation begins. It includes building mascots from food at Wismer, the carrying of the rocks, which bear the letters of each organization, and Greek volleyball, among other events. The format changes each year.
