Quick Stats

School Slang
  • Failure Hall: Pfahler Hall
  • The Kiosk: Generally speaking, Olin Plaza. There really is a kiosk in Olin Plaza, but students use the term in a general sense when deciding on a meeting location
  • The PAC/The ‘Scope : The Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Center
  • The Quad: BPS freshman dorm center
  • Strassy: Nickname students use when referring to Ursinus President John Strassburger
  • The Wiz: Wismer Dining Hall
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Ask for Wawa gift cards because Wawa is Mecca.
  • Learn how to manage time better for studying.
  • Learning to balance between Wismer, Zack’s, and Wawa is important.
  • There is almost nothing to do in Collegeville.
  • This is a great school for anyone who is undecided about a major.
Tips to Succeed
  • At Wismer, go for the garlic breadsticks.
  • Avoid Zack’s during rush hour (11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.).
  • Choose classes you will like.
  • Do your homework. It sounds stupid, but it’s true. Classes are challenging, and doing the homework makes them infinitely less challenging.
  • Don’t neglect the core requirements—this is a liberal arts school after all. Just because you have to take a science class doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it.
  • If you have a problem with anything, report it. Amazingly enough, there are people who listen to your complaints and will actually try to do something about it.
  • Participate in class. Even if your test scores are low and your paper grades are horrible, participating shows the professor you care. Plus, it almost always helps boost your grade.
  • Research your professors and classes. Don’t be afraid to e-mail professors you don’t know to ask about a class.
  • Use the library. Just because you have your own room and computer doesn’t mean you’ll get work done. Laptops are portable, and the library has a wireless network.

Small School

Everyone knows everyone at Ursinus. And the people you don't know you recognize from seeing them in the (there is only one) dining hall or out at parties. That being said its easy to make friends with people because you are seeing them over and over again in classes and conversations are easy to start. It is not close to Philly like they will make you beleive and almost no one leaves campus. Our school is unique in that almost everyone lives on campus all four years. There are houses that sophmores and juniors usually live in across the street which provides a homey feel.

Multicultural Dynamic, Co-Op Experience Is Excellent, Friendly Atmosphere, Serious but Fun Minded Students, Caring Professors and Mentors, Education Staff Is Very Helpful, Non-Prejudiced

Ursinus is a multi cultural school of many diverser cultures and groups. I have met many new friends and have experienced their cultures. Although the campus is made up of mostly white culture, there isn't a feeling of discrimination. Professors are very helpful and the new president is intellectual, talented and honest. Campus life is great, many opportunities to get involved.

CIE or known as the Common Intellectual Experience:

It is like an English class, because it involves the reading and discussion of books. It is a required course for all students even transfers. It allows for everyone to have a common background to begin from. It is cool because even if you are not in the same class as someone they are discussing the same thing, so it allows for a common ground between all students immediately once classes start. Some of the texts are also very interesting along with the typical few boring ones. It is a very easy class the only assignments are four papers, and then grading on class participation. The class sizes are around 15 students so very tiny and a lot of discussion.

Facts

Traditions
  • Greek Week: The Ursinus Greek community has at least one of these a year. It’s an event where Greek organizations get together and compete for the prize of being the best Greek club.
  • Sledding on Trays: When it snows, students will steal trays from the Wismer cafeteria to use as sleds.
  • Sliding before Graduation: Situated between Pfahler, Thomas, Reimert, and BWC, there is a pair of fountains that have a downward slope, which students slide down before graduating.
Urban Legends J.D. Salinger, who was a student at Ursinus in 1938, supposedly based descriptions in his novel, The Catcher in the Rye, on actual experiences at Ursinus.
