Iowa State University Atmosphere
Ames, IA is mostly populated by college students, so the local residents have a pretty good attitude towards students. There isn't a lot of serious crime, and I feel safe on campus and in town. There isn't a whole lot to do with shopping or cultural activities, but the university itself keeps students occupied with activities. The Super-Dogs on Welch Ave. are a must.

Six Months of Snow
The weather is cold and snowy. Most activities are forced inside. The university is good keeping the snow off the sidewalks, but ice is everywhere. Getting to and from class is still easy with the bus system.

Research, Research, Research
The university has hundreds of scholarships available that many students do not know about so competition is low. The financial aid website is full of them. Financial aid outside of scholarships is a long process, so start early.

Science and Engineering
This school is heavy on the sciences and especially engineering. They offer humanities and premedical programs, but Iowa State University is the place to go if you want a great education in one of the many engineering fields or if you want amazing research experience in sciences.

Ask Around
Campustown at ISU is full of cafes and little restaurants. There is a great variety of places to eat, all within walking distance of campus or right off of bus stops. More in town and away from campus are bigger chain restaurants, and more are being built right now. If you ask around or check out the ISU Daily you can find great deals. Even some of the bars have great lunch food, like Es Tas and their tacos.

Welch Ave. Superdog!
This is the Superdog, the midnight snack available for $5 across from the Kum-and-Go on Welch Avenue. It is unbelievable good and a campus must!
