Local Atmosphere at University of Miami

Coral Gables: a Stone's Throw Away from Miami

Coral Gables is a fantastic neighborhood. It's a metro ride to downtown Miami, a cab or bus ride to The Grove (Coconut Grove, a great area for shopping, dining, and nightlife,) or even South Beach! It's also close to Key Biscayne and Virginia Key, which are popular beach areas. But Coral Gables itself is a wealthy neighborhood with tons of restaurants, shopping, and fun located within walking or cab distance to campus.

Diversity at University of Miami

A-

Miami Prides Itself on Diversity

While UM is known for being a very diverse private institution, most racial/ethnic groups keep to their own. However, it's very easy to find anyone of a different race, gender, religion, belief system, etc on campus. I love that about Miami, that it's like a small piece of the world.

Off-Campus Housing at University of Miami

B+

Red Road, Merrick, the Grove, and Many Other Options

Housing in Miami is expensive. It's not much more to live on campus than to life off campus, and you definitely need a car or a bike to get to campus from the off-campus apartments and houses. The houses in the area are very expensive, but very beautiful. The apartments such as Red Road and Merrick aren't the best to live in, but they're not too bad for college students.

Campus Strictness at University of Miami

D

Dorm Punishments Are Strict

If you live in the dorms, you can get in a lot of trouble for underage drinking and drug use. If you get caught twice, you're forced out of the dorms. Most of the time, if you're quiet, you can get away with drinking in the dorms, just don't be loud and stupid. It really depends on the RA you get. Off-campus, it's pretty strict, but not too bad. It's a felony to possess a fake ID in Florida, but most of the time bouncers will just take your ID if it's fake, as long as you don't cause a scene.

Parking at University of Miami

D

Parking Is Horrendous

I don't have a car on campus, but getting parking is very difficult. If you don't have a pass for a certain zone (parking is broken up into color coordinated zones,) security will ticket you. If you live off campus, it's kind of necessary to have a car, though.
