Bring a Laptop
Although only about half of students type their notes and half hand write, I would bring your own laptop for writing papers etc. The library computers are always crowded, but they are nice!

No Classes, Liberal Professors
Budget cuts mean that getting you classes in an absolute nightmare!!! Or maybe budgget cuts aren't to blame, it's just that there are so many people here! UCLA can be summed up as follows: too many people fighting for limited spaces, whether that is activities or classes, especially classes. I would advise you to come in with AP credits at the very least, and preferably a few college classes so that units will give you a slight advantage in signing up for classes.
The quarter system is great because you get to take so many classes. Once you get sick of your class, it's almost over and a new quarter means new classes. However, the quarter system is not always compatible with your friends' schedules who are on a semester schedule. We start school incredibly late (at the end of Sept), but also get out incredibly late (mid June).
The professors are terribly liberal, some even commmunist I would say.
There are study areas everywhere, but during peak hours they will be busy because, well, like I said UCLA has so many people and we are all fighting for spaces that just aren't there.

USC Rivalry
Unfortunatly, football games (and basketball games this year) are an all0day affair because you have to get bused to the games, which are off campus. Partly because of te horrible LA traffic, the last bus leaves two hours before the game even starts. Between leaving for the bus and returning, you are gone for 5+ hours, which sucks on weekends when you have homework.
there is a ton of school spirit, especially in the rivalry against usc. The gym is nice, although there aren't enough machines for the demand, and there are tons of sports and athletic acitivites offered, on and off campus.

Join Clubs, Get Involved
Too many people fighting for limited spaces, too liberal. Get involved with people like you. Without the clubs I joined I would not be having fun. Lots to do in LA, great area, right in beverly hills, near santa monica, downtown, holloywood
