Housing
Cost is high, but there are quite a few options AROUND campus, not on. Some of the houses are rundown (typical college house), but there are some that are better than others. A lot of apartment choices, but you will either have to walk a little ways or take a bus to campus. The closer you get to campus, the more expensive it's going to get.

Used to Be More Fun
The bar scene gets crazy around 11 p.m. on weekends. FAC is very popular as well as Thirsty Thursday's. Most bars have some sort of specials during the weekend. However, since they have restricted entry to the bars to be atleast 21 years of age, things have calmed down substantially. You can try a fake ID, but odds are you will get turned away. The bar scene was much better before they passed the 21 law.

Not Good
The parking on campus is horrible. I opted for apartments off-campus, but within walking distance, so that saved me a lot of money. I would suggest not bringing a car as a freshman and wait until you get an apartment later on.

A Lot of Options.
There are quite a few Greek houses on campus, so if you do join, you will most likely be close to campus or a Cambus stop. They always seem to have something going on, so it would give you something extra to do. Most of the Greek houses here are pretty stereotypical.

Looking for Trouble
The use of underage alcohol comsumption is very strict. It seems like people are always getting busted for doing it, but most people still do it anyway. Be discrete. Obviously, drugs are illegal in Iowa, so don't do it on campus. Socially, it can be a burden because it seems like the University cops or Iowa City cops are always looking for a party to bust. As long as you keep the noise done, it shouldn't be a problem.

Mediocre
The Cambus is free, and there are a lot of different buses for different routes. Occassionally, you will get a bus off schedule, so that kind of throws your day off, but overall, if you want to get around campus, the Cambus is the thing to use since it also connects to the hospital, which is across the river (some of your classes may be over there). Most city bus passes, if you live off-campus, will cost you about $25 per month, which isn't outrageous (cheaper than parking in a ramp every day).
