Academics at University of Virginia

A

Really Great So Far

I'm only a first year, but so far I'm impressed with the academics. I wouldn't advise anyone to take 1010 level classes unless he/she wants an easy A or B because they can be boring, but the higher level classes are great. All of my professors are wonderful and I feel like I'm learning a lot already. I can't wait to complete another 7 semesters at UVA!

Drug Safety at University of Virginia

B

Present but Not Too Scary

I think it's safe to say that most people at UVA drink and a handful drink way too much, but if you use not to get involved, it probably won't bother you (as long as you're not stuck with a roommate/hallmates that drink too much). I've heard that RAs let drinking in dorms slide with a warning the first time and the second time you are reported, although most people aren't caught because RAs aren't allowed to just barge into people's rooms. I don't know anyone who does drugs, except for weed, but I don't even that's terribly common. The bottom line is, if it's not your thing you won't be forced into it, but if you go out to frat parties, be careful. I'm glad that the university gives its students a lot of freedom, but you are taking a risk if you're not spending your weeknights with people that you trust.

Transportation at University of Virginia

A

The Buses Are Awesome

I live pretty far away from classes but I don't have any problems getting the them. The UTS buses come every 10 minutes and they are very easy to use. The trolleys are also available and even faster. It's nice to know that I can get downtown or to Barracks Road without any problems. I've never tried to use a Charlottesville bus, but I've seen them around and I'd know where to get on one if I had too. They are free for any student with a UVA ID.

Computers at University of Virginia

B+

Cavcomputers Is Very Accessible and Helpful

I didn't buy my computer through UVA but I did go to CavComputers for help with my computer and they were great. I would definitely advise people to BUY A PRINTER because printing in the library is a pain the neck. The wireless network is very reliable and available anywhere on grounds. It gets slow sometimes, but nothing too bad.

Campus Dining at University of Virginia

C+

Not so great

For the most part, the food at UVA isn't very good. It's very repetitive and most things are undercooked, overcooked, and/or bland. I'm thankful that I live by Runk, which is the best of the dining halls in my opinion. I only ever go to O-Hill and Newcomb to socialize, never for the food. There are some good things- sandwiches, frozen yogurt, omlets, but most of it is nothing to get excited about. There is good food that you can get with Plus Dollars (dumplings, yummm), but most of it is unhealthy. After your first year, learn to cook.

Guys & Girls at University of Virginia

B+

Boys are cute but not always desirable

There are a lot of cute guys at UVA. If you want eye candy, it's not too hard to find. However, I've learned that a lot guys (mainly first years) are more into hooking up, drinking, and chilling with their bros than getting to know girls as possible girlfriends. Of course there are some exceptions, but don't expect to find a boyfriend or even go out on dates your first year. Get to know guys as flirty friends and hope that they mature over time.

Nightlife at University of Virginia

A-

Lots of parties

There are frat parties every weekend and they're easy to get into if you're patient (and if you're female or bring females with you.) As the person below me said, frat parties are more of a first year thing. Upperclassmen tend to go to apartment parties, which are also very common. If you're not into partying there's also quite a bit to do downtown and the Corner is always a great place to hang out.
