English Major
The English teachers are awesome, they really encourage you to use their office hours if you need help or even just to talk. You can bounce ideas off of them for your papers, whatever you need. I love that the professors are not all scary and non-relatable. I suppose because of the small class sizes, you feel like you can go to them with a problem and not face back lash.

Totally Safe
We are one of the safest campus in the nation. We have one entrance on and off campus every day of the year except for one day. During 1 day a year, a second entrance is open because the school is near a football field that has a serious classic game which causes traffic problems. There is little theft, and if anyone is caught stealing it is against the honor code anyways and they face serious repercussions. There are only about 5 emergency call boxes on campus- because that is how little we need them.

Dont Count on It
Pretty much everyone lives on campus, with the exception of a few upperclassman and people who already lived in Birmingham. The campus is in the middle of a neighborhood you would not want to live in, and you're pretty much required to live there until you are 21/ a junior.

Dorms Are Lame
With the exception of the brand new dorms for upperclassmen (Lakeview), all of the dorm options suck. The buildings are all old and moldy. They just put in a brand new dining hall, and we got a brand new lake area. The library is a good place to study, nice and quiet.

Great on Certain Days
There is a "Southern Shuttle" which runs on Wednesdays and Sundays to a shopping center not too far away with lots to do, and on certain Saturdays to the mall. But there is no on campus transport since it is so small, and there is no other off campus transport.

Great Times in Magic City
Living in Birmingham has been one of the best experiences of my life. While not everywhere is pretty or safe, like any normal city, it has such an amazing cultural history. There are plenty of museums and libraries. Five points and other parts of downtown have great clubs and restaurants, and with three malls less than 30 minutes from campus, and an outlet mall just out of town, shopping opportunities are abound. There are also a lot of great things to do such as visiting Vulcan, going to the Zoo, or just hanging out downtown.

Bang for Your Buck
The academics at BSC are really worth every penny of your actual tuition. Class sizes are small, the largest I have ever been in was about 60 people, compared to class sizes of 400+ at state schools. The professors are always available to talk about papers or assignments, or just to talk. Interim term is amazing because you have a chance to travel abroad or just stay around campus focusing on one class. The curriculum is easy to understand, and registration is all online. In terms of workload, it depends on your schedule and your extra curriculars, but the whole point of college is to be learning so don't expect easy a's!

English Majors
The curriculum for an English Major at BSC is the best curriculum option. Instead of being told exactly which 10-13 classes you have to take and then fighting to get in them, you have a guideline of categories that classes fall into, and you have the fill each category. The teachers in the English program are great, and very helpful when it comes to scheduling choices. Each semester the English Honorary Sigma Tau Delta holds a semester preview where the professors all get together and explain what they expect their class to be like, what the class will be covering/reading, etc.
