Drug Safety at Brown University

B

First Time Partiers but Nothing Serious

The first few weeks of freshman year, kids tend to drink and smoke in huge amounts. Most go out Friday and Saturday, but you will hear talk about going out on Wednesday (I think the actual number of people who go out on Wednesday is disproportionate to the talking about it). Athletes will party on different days, depending on their schedules. Sometimes birthday parties will occur mid-week. People drink and smoke weed. Due to it's liberal, stereotypically "hippie" feel, Brown sees a lot more hallucinogenics--tabs, mushrooms, etc.--than "hard" drugs (at least in my experience). There is also some E, and I'm sure some coke. All in all, the drug use is primarily just weed and alcohol. If you are opposed to marijuana or alcohol consumption, you might have a problem at Brown. Otherwise, the other drugs will appear so infrequently if you don't seek them out--in fact, you probably won't see them at all--that I wouldn't worry about it. These are smart kids, and though they do dumb things, they care about the state of their brains.

Campus Strictness at Brown University

A+

Not Strict

Brown is laid-back. You only get in trouble if you really do something deserving of it (i.e. smoking in front of a hallway fire alarm).

Transportation at Brown University

A+

Pleasant Walking

The first few weeks of Brown, some kids tend to lose weight due to all the walking. There is literally no way to bring your car to Brown freshman year, and it's extremely difficult after that. There is little to no parking, but everything is within walking distance.

As Brown students, we get free access to RIPTA in case we want to go to the Providence Place Mall or even take a journey to Pawtucket to try out a restaurant or a similar scenario.

Coming from an area in which a car is a necessity, I find the increase in walking relaxing. Very rarely do I miss my car and not enough to deal with the hassle of buying gas and maintaing it, as I have to do back home.
