Academics at Cornell University

A+

Academic Bliss and Libraries Galore!

As someone who has had the unique opportunity to take classes in almost every one of Cornell's seven colleges (being undecided your first two semesters allows a great deal of freedom!), I can comfortably say that our academics are among the best. Workload is a very subjective matter but, in my opinion, it is entirely manageable. Classrooms run the gamut from old charm with beautiful wood tables, to high tech lecture halls outfitted with smartboards and the most up-to-date technology. I think what I've found most surprising in my time at Cornell is how incredibly accessible the professors are. They truly love what they do and seem to genuinely care about their students. From connecting you to leaders in your field of interest to supporting academic pursuits, professors are just one of Cornell's many great resources. There are also like a million libraries (give or take a few), each better than the next. I generally don't like libraries to study (too quiet) but every once in a while they are a great place to hole up and really get a lot done...trust me, come finals time, you'll be glad there are so many options!

Off-Campus Housing at Cornell University

B-

Good Things Come to Those Who Pay!

Ithaca is a college town. Landlords know this and, for the most part, exploit it for all it's worth. I've recently started an apartment hunt for our group of 4 next year and was somewhat disgusted to see average sized 3 bedroom apartments going for some $2,500 a month! That said, it's very easy to find decent off-campus housing that's safe and convenient. Once you divide the cost up among a few people, the price is a little easier to swallow, plus it's almost always cheaper than the packaged on campus housing. With a little bargain hunting, you can definitely find a place for less and there are also lots of houses available for rent. The cost of parking a car on or off campus is also obscene. You could probably afford to buy a gently used vehicle in three years time for the same amount of money so opt for a bus pass or just walk...it's Ithaca, so nothing is ever really that far away anyways!

Campus Strictness at Cornell University

A-

It Really Depends

Recent events have resulted in sweeping changes and, most likely, stricter enforcement of penalties to discourage underage drinking. However, it really depends on a lot of factors. There is something of a three strikes policy in effect. Your first offense will often just get you JA'd with a warning and some online alcohol course. second offense gets a call home and more severe punishment. third offense may result in the University asking you to take a semester off. This almost NEVER happens. You'd literally have to take shots in class, or something equally ridiculous. They've also got a great medical amnesty program, sort of a "get out of JA free card" that allows you to get help (or call for someone else) without fear of penalty. For the most part, people don't get caught unless they are really stupid about their drinking and drugs (i.e. loud and obvious) or do it in the dorms. Even so, I know people that smoked in their dorm rooms and have gotten in no trouble and others who've gotten JA'd because an empty can was spotted after a noise complaint. RA strictness really runs the gamut so there is no definitive standard. CUPD are the worst. Avoid them. Very strict about 'open container' violations whether it's alcohol or Gatorade they tend to be skeptics and hyper aware so again, you just have to be careful. It is by no means a prison, but there are some rules.
