Off-Campus Housing at University of Rochester

A

Cheap and Roomy!

Housing in Rochester is extremely cheap. You can rent a really nice house with some friends for way less than most people spend on studio apartments in crappy sections of New York City. There are a ton of options within walking distance of the school. There is a lot of turnover because a lot of the houses are occupied by students, so it's easy to find a place. I would just advise that you take caution about houses located in sketchy neighborhoods like the 19th ward.

Overall Experience at University of Rochester

A+

Dynamic Students Make for an Amazing College Experience

I absolutely love this school. It's so diverse! No matter what kind of person you are or what you're interested in, you will find your niche here. There are always fun things going on during the weekends and frat parties to go to, but if that's not your scene, you will definitely not be alone. People are constantly in the library studying. Students work hard and motivate one another. Everyone is supportive and academically-minded, not snotty and competitive. But we definitely know how to have a good time! The campus is breathtakingly beautiful, especially when it's nice out. Even though the winters can be a little long, the school bands together. There's Winterfest and tray sledding behind Danforth to get us through! I could not have asked for a more well-rounded, amazing school.

Open Curriculum Lets You Do What You Want Right Away

One thing that a lot of Rochester students take for granted is our curriculum set-up. There are very little requirements, so you're able to dive right into your major or simply explore and actually take classes you want to be taking right off the bat. I know a lot of people who complained about having to fulfill math, language, English, and science requirements before they could even start taking the cooler and more interesting and specialized classes. At Rochester, the curriculum is really open, so we're very spoiled!

Athletics at University of Rochester

C-

Rochester Is NOT About Sports

Rochester students are more focused on grades and other clubs than going to games and rooting for our teams. Don't get me wrong, we totally have school spirit, we just express it in different ways... Our teams are generally pretty good, they just don't have a lot of support from the student body.

Campus Strictness at University of Rochester

A-

Rochester Is Pretty Chill

Honestly, Rochester is not very strict. Academically, you can get away with a lot. Partying definitely happens, but since we don't normally get too out-of-control, we don't normally get into trouble. Sometimes Residential Life decides to crack down randomly, but usually the punishments are more like warnings.

Diversity at University of Rochester

A

We're SO Diverse!

Honestly, our school is one big melting pot of diversity! I've never known an institution to have such a wide range of people. From religion, economic background, nationality, and gender to race, sexual orientation, interests and skills, the University of Rochester totally deserves an A in diversity!

Drug Safety at University of Rochester

B-

Drinking Happens but No One Is Pressured

Partying and drinking definitely happen on campus (other drugs are much, much less common), but if you don't drink, everyone pretty much respects that. You can totally have fun without doing anything like that. But the University is pretty good about making sure its students are safe and acknowledging the fact that drinking happens instead of brushing it under the rug.

Parking at University of Rochester

Parking Is the Pits (Apparently)

I personally don't have a car on campus, but I've heard so many people complain about campus parking that I can only imagine how annoying it would be to have one. I'm honestly glad I don't! People can always find spots, they just have to walk a little farther to get to campus. And the Parking Office tickets people left and right, but they're actually really easy to fight and get wiped from your records. Plus, you get to keep all or most of your money.
