Athletics at Scripps College

B+

Wonderful Field House, but Not Big on Sports

Varisty sports are not very big at Scripps College. Our teams are formed with Claremont McKenna College and Harvey Mudd College (CMS). We have a variety of teams, though, and games are relatively well-attended, especially water polo and basketball. Our dance team is great, and the Claremont Colleges Cycling Team is popular. I personally don't know anyone who does intramural sports, but clubs are always being made. Most remarkable, Scripps College has a brand-new AMAZING field house, with a beautiful pool and work-out machines with TVs. (Students joke that it's just like a resort!) Staying healthy and exercising--even if not via a team sport--is important, and our facilities show it.

Nightlife at Scripps College

A+

Campus-Oriented, AMAZING Nightlife!

Scripps College itself is a quiet campus, except for the two to three parties we host per year. However, this is a huge plus, because the parties at the other Claremont Colleges are amazing, and so you can go out and have fun and then go back to a quiet, clean dorm. Also, the few parties we do host are amazing since we put so much more effort into them.

Scripps is strict on alcohol, but most of the other Claremont Colleges aren't; you can easily find free alcohol and walk around the campuses with it (well, not Scripps campus, but the other ones). Since it's Southern California, the weather is always grogeous so most people are partying outside. Parties are often themed, and we've even have bouncy castles before. You can find a party every day of the week from Tues. through Saturday; most of them are weekly events. Campus security is there to keep us safe--never to bust us.

If you don't drink, nightlife is still great. There are always lots of free movies, free dance lessons, concerts, and other events going on at one of the Colleges.

Everything is very campus-based, though. Transportation around Los Angeles is awful, even if you have a car (but especially if you don't), and although some people go into the city to concerts and clubs, it's uncommon. Claremont itself is a very not college-student-oriented town, either; I think there's one bar. But, the nightlife here is so amazing you really don't need to.

Greek Life at Scripps College

N/A

None...

I think Pomona College has one frat. I can't think of anything they do; they don't have a house. And that's it for Greek life at the Claremont Colleges.

Some people joke that Scripps College is like one big soriety just because it's a very small all-women's college, but that's not at all true. (At least not based off of the soriety stereotypes I know!) The all-women's atmopshere is amazing; I love the community here. Everyone is so nice and supportive of everyone else. And, of course, you can still find boys simply by walking 10 minutes to another campus... or just by going to the dining hall.

Campus Housing at Scripps College

A

Resort-Like Housing

The dorms here are AMAZING! We have our "old dorms," which include the original building on Scripps. These ones are full of character, are very beautiful (a couple overlook our Rose Garden), and have plenty of large singles... most upperclassmen live in these ones.

We have a couple ugly-ish dorms that were built in the 60s and 70s, but at least they have air-conditioning. These are a lot of first-year housing, though all the dorms are mixed which is great. Two of these dorms have amazing 7-person suites, where each person gets a single and you share bathrooms (with a bathtub!), and a living room.

The best dorm at Scripps is the newest one, which is the most gorgeous dorm ever, is air-conditioned, has huge rooms, and the most gorgeous kitchen (it's bigger than my kitchen back home!)

Scripps is a very residential campus, so most people do choose to live in dorms too. ALL our dorms have a grand piano in them, and most have a courtyard attached that your room may even open up to. They all have kitchens and studying rooms we call "Browsing Rooms." We have a variety of options for everyone, from singles (which don't cost extra money), to huge triples, to 4 or 7 person suites. We also have apartments on campus. The housing here is amazing.
