Local Atmosphere at Hampton University

Home by the Sea

"Welcome to Hampton, VA, your new home by the sea." That's what everyone kept telling me when I first came here. I have to admit, this place is absolutely beautiful. Catch some breeze by the sea and bask in the evening sun. And don't forget to stop by Bay Days: my favorite time of the year. Lots of food, music, and stores to get souvenirs. And who can forget about our Peninsula Mall! Five minutes away from campus, only a cheap cab ride away. But the one time of year I'm most hype about is football season. Go Pirates! I tailgate and watch the games every home game. And believe me...IT'S LIVE! All I have to say is I love my H-I-U!

Facilities at Hampton University

Just a Little to Much History

As you may know, Hampton University is a HBCU: historically black college and university. Yes, it is largely accredited and will land you almost any job with a degree from here, but the buildings here don't seem to match the price I'm paying. $18,000 a month, and students receive a postage-stamp sized room, less than up to par restrooms, a small gameroom that's never open, buildings with no air-conditioning, elevators that work half the time, and small elementary student desks. The best buildings we have are the student center and the library. All this makes me wonder where is all our money going to? Come on HU.

Diversity at Hampton University

A-

HBCU

Considering this is a HBCU, the majority of students are African-Americans. Don't get me wrong: there are plenty of other people of color. It's just that I rarely see them. They're like a needle in the haystack. You know they're there, but good luck finding them. As far as religion, I know people are primarily either Baptists, Christian, or non-denominational. As far as sexual orientation, we have a lot of everything, and people are comfortable with one another to be open about it.
