Athletics at American University

B

American University Athletics

As a private, liberal-arts university, American is not as heavily focused on athletic performance as other colleges and universities around the nation are and, hence, doesn't have a football team. This fact was saddening at first because I loved high school football, but once you start your studies you quickly discover where the extra money is going: education (the real reason you're here in the first place).

The most popular sport at American is the women's volleyball team which is a Division One team and regularly clinches the Patriot League. Home volleyball games are definitely fun and fan support is very strong, especially during Bender Blue-Outs.

The athletic facilities on campus are excellent for such a small university. The team facilities are large and accommodating and the regular/public facilities are just as good.

Nightlife at American University

A-

East Coast Gem

As far as the nightlife goes at AU, there is always plenty to do. Being in the northwest corner of Washington DC, students have access to the city's many attractions, clubs, and bars. Though AU is a dry campus, there are plenty of Fraternities and Sororities off-campus for everyone's enjoyment. For those who don't feel like a hangover the next morning, "night monumenting" on the National Mall is also very popular.

Overall Experience at American University

A

Eagle Pride

So far I'm extremely happy with my experience at AU. I knew I wanted to be in DC for the connections and proximity of government institutions, and AU is perfect for this. The campus - which is in a very nice area - is absolutely beautiful, especially during fall when the leaves are changing. My first couple weeks of school were marked by meeting new friends, creating lasting relationships, enjoying new freedoms and responsibilities, and a general feeling of satisfaction with my choice. Overall, if I would have to go though the process again, I would have applied early decision to AU because I love it that much.

Academics at American University

A

Political Science/International Relations Track

There is no doubt that you're getting what you paid for at AU as far as education goes. The classes are hard, but manageable and you WILL learn. Being in DC and at AU is a combination made in heaven, especially when your professors have participated in political campaigns, done extensive research in foreign countries, or worked in government.

Computers at American University

Oh Eaglesecure...

The internet at AU, called EagleSecure, is definitely not the most reliable technology on the planet, but it is relatively fast. The internet will disconnect at strange times, and it seems like they're always doing maintenance on something. This shouldn't, however, take away from the overall technological aspect of AU. There are IT professionals available every day that will/can fix most anything.

Greek Life at American University

B+

No Animal House

The Greek life at AU is good and there are plenty of frats and sororities that are chartered by the university. Nobody is going to pressure you to join anything and, for the most part, the frat brothers are nice. There aren't any university-sponsored Greek houses, but the individual frats/sororities usually have their own house off-campus.

Transportation at American University

Transportation at AU

Overall, if you want to get off of campus and you don't have a car, you'll be using the (free) shuttle that will take you to the Metro station in Tenleytown. The DC Metro system is awesome, plain and simple. It charges you for how far you go, not a flat rate so everyone is charged fairly. If you decide to go home by train, taking the Metro to Union Station is also simple, because you don't need to change lines. Going to Reagan International Airport is a bit more complicated, but definitely possible and done frequently.
