Great Atmosphere
DC was tied for number one as the top town kids go to after they graduate college. There is always something to see and do. Free concerts at the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonians, Clubs, free showings of movies, etc. As long as you're smart about it it's a really safe place, just don't go anywhere late at night by yourself. Great shopping at Pentagon City, or Eastern Market if you want a less traditional shopping experience. It's easy to see sports at the Verizon Center, or Nationals Stadium -- and they have $5 game day tickets -- even if the Nationals aren't very good. The locals hate tourists, not students: so as long as you stand on the right and walk on the left on metro escalators, you should be fine with locals.

Okay Greek Life
It is easy to be social and not involved in greek life. However, because the campus is dry, a lot of night life exists because of Greek Life. It is not a large part of campus, at about 25%, but visibly present. Obviously, no Greek houses.

It Varies...
Late July and August are insufferable, but the dorms are air conditioned. Falls are amazing. Spring it rains constantly. Winter is chilly, with little snow.

Great Professors
The SIS, SPA, and SOC are top programs in their field. Workload depends on your teachers. Facilities in most majors are state of the art -- including the brand new, green, SIS building. ENDLESS internship opportunities thanks to the large alumni base.

Many Gen Eds
AU requires you to take 10 classes across 5 areas of study, as well as two writing classes, and a math class. That is a lot of time not devoted to your major, but they want to make sure that what you're majoring in, is what you want to be majoring in. Registration goes by number of credits completed, with RAs getting priority registration.

Student center is good, library is awful
The student center is pretty good and a great place to hang out. The library is awful for the size and prestige of the University, and I study at the Washington School of Law library every chance I get because of how much better it is. Campus is an oasis in DC, but doesn't look like Hogwarts by any stretch.

Great for Underclassmen
Dorms tend to be on the larger side (compared to other schools), clean and centrally located to classes. Centennial and Anderson Halls are regarded as the most widely desired. Especially with the Perch on the first floor of Anderson.
However, housing in DC is expensive and Room and Board cost reflects that. Room selection is awful, and Housing and Dining are completely unresponsive to civil requests. Plus, housing is no longer guarunteed for upperclassmen.

Well...It's DC
Permits cost nearly 1,000$, and there is no getting away with not having one. However, because there is a shuttle to metro, most kids do not find a need to have their cars on campus. I know many people with cars just sitting in their driveways at home because they refuse to bring them.

Internships Rule All
I transferred to AU because I had a panic attack sophomore year about not being able to find a job post-graduation. Everyone I've talked to has a serious preference towards AU grads because they tend to be less entitled and work harder than the other schools in DC. I've had four internships since I transferred here, and I know that it'll be the difference between me and kids at my old school who only babysat for four years.
