Academics at University of Tennessee

Still Quite Mediocre

Tennessee catches a lot of flack for its education. Although it's not the best around, it's not the worst either. If you make the most out of it, and apply early enough for courses you actually need (registration process is by seniority and the freshmen Honors students come before regular freshmen) you'll get a decent education.

Scholarships at University of Tennessee

Apply Early!

As a freshman, your admittance application serves as your application for all scholarships. So check those deadlines and apply early! They also have merit scholarships based on ACT scores (I think the $1000 one starts at a 25)

Greek Life at University of Tennessee

B+

Greeks Are Everywhere

You can't go anywhere on campus without seeing one girl with her letters on, be it a T-shirt, hat, cup, anything. Most of the parties you'll go to in your freshman year are Greek-ran. There's definitely a strong Greek presence on campus, and rushing is pretty rewarding, if that's your kind of scene.

Diversity at University of Tennessee

C-

Diversi-who?

There are some people on this campus that will say the school is "pretty diverse." They're not lying; the campus IS diverse compared to the towns they come from. Seeing as how a good number of students come from towns that are 90% Caucasian, seeing 5 African Americans and 3 Asians is considered "diversity." Sometimes you'll hear people saying really ignorant things, but they don't mean it to be rude. They're just very culturally unaware, and, despite the school's "Diversity Initiatives," most students here aren't in a rush to learn anything about other cultures, seeing as how the school is roughly 80% Caucasian anyway. Don't come here and expect to see as much involvement in heritage fairs as you would with athletics.

Campus Dining at University of Tennessee

C

Eh

Most of the restaurants around campus are OK. Not great, but they'll get the job done and feel you up. The dining hall food is pretty bland and not healthy at all. By the end of your first semester, you're pretty much using your meal plan at Starbucks, groceries, Papa John's, or other non-UTK ran food places.

Drug Safety at University of Tennessee

C-

Natty Light for Life

I guess school officials don't consider alcohol a "drug" or are OK with the image of UTK of being a party school because there is rarely any strictness on drinking. If you're drinking on the street or running around drunk, of course you'll get caught. But if you stay somewhat secretive about it, no one will care. Just about everyone on this campus drinks from Thursday to Sunday morning.

Nightlife at University of Tennessee

It gets old

If you enjoy drinking, partying, or drinking while partying, your weekends will be enjoyable. But for those of us who don't enjoy getting plastered in the same location with the same people every weekend, all of it gets pretty old. The clubs are pretty dirty and are frequented by people over 30 on Saturdays. You can still find something to do; you'll just have to be more creative.
