Barnard College: Off-Campus Housing
Apartments in NYC are hard to come by at a decent size and cost. Parking is also a problem of course, though there are garages nearby.

It's College.
First of all, it's college. You're not going to find a boyfriend/girlfriend the first week you get here, or probably at all your first year, though some do. There's a lot of sleazy bars/"night clubs" (if you can call them that) where people hook up. Guys invite girls back to their rooms, and there's mostly just a lot of random hookups.
As for the people, the girls at Barnard really aren't that bad. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of freaks (like a lot actually, and the lesbian thing is not a rumor) but there are plenty of really hot girls here too. When it comes to guys: a lot of asians and some cute athletes.
Basically, some very unattractive people, but not anymore than the rest of the world, but some very hot people at this school.

So Easy.
It's New York City. There's a subway stop right outside the gates. It's the best/easiest spot in the city to catch a cab.

I know it's New York City, but...
I know it's New York City, but when it comes to nightlife on Barnard/Columbia's campus itself, there's not much of it. If you go downtown there are a million clubs and bars to go to. Most of them even accept a fake id. There are very few dorm parties (basically none at all) which usually end before 1AM. The frat's suck, unless you're in them and like to spend your night drinking cheap beer with a bunch of fat guys watching sports on tv. (A whole frat house of guys will ignore all the girls there if there's a good game on.) There's a few sleazy bars/"clubs" near campus, and unless you know everyone in there, it's not much fun. If you want a school with a great party life where you don't have to trek all over the city, don't come here. If you love NYC and just can't wait to be here and party, then come.

This makes me love Barnard
Barnard health services are amazing! The health center is always open and available and will help you with any imaginable problem. On late nights or odd hours, you can call "clinician-on-call" which directs your call to nurses to answer your questions and tell you what to do in a medical emergency situation. In addition to being very helpful and extremely nice and friendly, Barnard's mandatory health insurance plan is also great. If you ever need to go to the emergency room/hospital, an escort will come knock on your door, direct you to a public safety van outside, which will drive you to the hospital, where an RA on duty will meet you and stay with you the whole time. You will then be escorted back in the van, never having spent more than a second alone. And you'll get a follow up email/phone call making sure you're ok and that you've had a fine experience with everything. And everything is completely confidential and cost-free. Another plus-Barnard prescribes really inexpensive birth control, no blood test, no long appointment, just a quick trip to health services to pick up the packs (they'll give you 6 at a time.)
