Campus Housing at Xavier University

A-

A Variety of Living Options at a Somewhat High Cost

The quality of on-campus living at Xavier varies among the dorms and apartments. While these options are much more expensive than living off campus, the buildings are generally nice and convenient. Beunger Hall is known for being the nicest (and least social) of the four dorms, but you have to be an honors student or athlete to live there. Husman and Kuhlman are suite-style and generally have their own unique mix of people. Brockman is the typical community bathroom dorm, but everyone who has ever lived there has loved it. It's definitely the most social dorm on campus. The apartments are nice and occupied by upperclassmen. The University Apartments look scary from the outside (it's the oldest building on campus), but the inside is rather nice. The Village and Commons apartments are popular among upperclassmen, as they provide a nice living arangement so close to campus. A new dorm is set to be finished by Fall 2011, adding a new option to the mix of on-campus living.

Off-Campus Housing at Xavier University

B+

A Competitive Housing Market

Off campus housing at Xavier is a process that starts early. If you want a decent house at a decent price, you will need to find it and sign the lease by Halloween the year prior to living there. Most houses near campus are for groups of 3-6 people, but the city of Norwood has a law that no more than four unrelated people may live together. Most landlords are able to escape this, however, mostly by allowing other tenants to go under the radar. The typical price for housing is about $300+/month plus utilities. There are a lot of houses close by, but they fill up quickly, so planning ahead is crucial. This process affects people who apply for an RA position, as that application process occurs during the middle of the spring semester. If you apply to be an RA and don't get the position, it will be best to have an on-campus housing option in mind.

Diversity at Xavier University

B-

There Really Is Diversity Here - It's Just a Little Hard to Find

I've had the fortune of meeting several people of various ethnic and religious backgrounds, but it has taken three semesters to be able to comfortably say that. The majority of the student body is caucasian, but there is also a significant population of African-American, Hispanic, Asian, and various international students. There are organizations that focus on these cultural backgrounds, such as the Black Student Association, and students in these groups tend to congregate together.

Nightlife at Xavier University

B

Limited Urban Nightlife

Cincinnati doesn't have a lot to offer college students as far as nightlife is concerned. The bar/club scene is best for students 21 and over. Most Xavier students go to house parties near campus, which can be pretty fun. The UC party scene is also a popular and enjoyable option.
