The professors are incredible at Bates. I'm a psychology major, and I can say without a doubt that some of those professors are the most intelligent, caring, and incredible people I have ever met. Classes are interesting, professors are always available to help with work, but, more than that, they're also there to talk to you and get to know you. They've been an invaluable resource for me. From what I've experienced and heard, most of the professors are like that across all the disciplines.

At Bates, it completely depends on the sport. Men's basketball is huge—they get a huge turnout for games, and people get pretty into it. Football, however, not so much. The team isn't great, so people don't pay much attention. IMs are pretty big, though, because anybody can participate.

Bates has an interesting...
Bates has an interesting policy—when it comes to alcohol, beer and wine are allowed, but hard alcohol is a NO. Everybody at Bates gets three strikes—if you're seen in a room with hard alcohol, even if you're not drinking it, you get a strike. So, if you're going to drink it, you'd better have it hidden really well and be really quiet while you're drinking it so you don't attract any attention. When it comes to beer and wine, security is pretty relaxed—they just want to make sure that everyone's being safe.

It completely depends on the time...
It completely depends on the time of the semester. During finals, the computer labs are generally full. It's also difficult because a lot of majors require work to be done with special computer programs, such as math or statistic programs, that are only available on the school computers. It would certainly be possible to get by without your own computer, but it makes things easier having your own. During finals, I would be worried that I wouldn't necessarily be able to find one if I didn't have my own.

There's no Greek life at Bates, and that's one of the things I like best about it. There's nothing exclusive about the social scene—if you want to go to a party, you can go.

Parties on campus generally consist of hanging out in peoples' rooms and drinking or going to houses and drinking. It's pretty laid-back—nobody wears heels. It's fun, but it does get old after a while. There are two pubs nearby, but they're really only for students 21+. They're fun but still not like any crazy bars you'd find in a big city.

Nobody really lives off campus, at all. If anybody does, I'm pretty sure it's just seniors. There are houses located off the main campus, but Bates owns them. Very few people find their own houses or apartments because it just isn't worth it at a school so small and in such a dreary area.
