Double Majoring at Tulane
CollegeProwler only allows for one heading under the major category, so I selected my first major. In reality, I'm a double major focusing on Political Science as well as Creative Writing. Tulane makes it easy for students to pursue two or even multiple areas of interest, to the extent that the majority of people I know are double majors as well.
As to Creative Writing and Political Science specifically, thus far I have no complaints. My absolute favorite Professor ever taught an Expository Writing class that really opened my eyes and I've reached nickname terms with one of my Political Science professors. The opportunities available in the Political Science field especially are amazing - you can run internships, take classes with notable New Orleans political greats, and even take a class under famed political consultant James Carville. The curriculum is, as you'd expect from a self-proclaimed "Southern Ivy," not lax in anyway, but it allows a lot of wiggle room for extracurricular activities as well.

Studying in New Orleans
As far as I'm concerned, there is no better town in which to study than New Orleans. Tulane is perfectly located - it's in the so-called Garden District, a rich and comparatively safe area of the city with a streetcar stop to downtown at its doorstep. You're one step away from all of the attractions of central New Orleans, but you really needn't even leave campus for a good time. Tulane boasts two campus bars and a plethora of student run activities, ranging from sporadic moon bounces, random quad parties, summertime ice-skating, and free Turkish, Indian, Vietnamese, Jewish, etc. meals at frequent intervals. You will never, ever run out of things to do at Tulane (nor swipes on your meal card if you plan it right).

A Southern Education
As a northern girl living in the South for the first time, let me just say, the weather is absolutely beautiful. There is absolutely nothing better than calling my friends in New York in February and casually saying, "Oh, it's 25 where you are? Shame. It's 70 here." Now, don't get me wrong, it can get pretty humid at the beginning of fall and end of spring semester, but it's beautiful weather for sunbathing and the incredibly mild winters more than make up for it.
As an aside, the first thing people will ask you when you decide to go to Tulane is, "oh, how are you going to handle the hurricanes?" The media attention on Katrina makes hurricanes seem far more frequent than they actually are. We haven't had any since I came to Tulane. If, by chance, they do suspect a hurricane is coming your way, a) it will be no Katrina, guaranteed and b) when you register, you are required to set up an evacuation process and they'll evacuate you for free if you haven't got a plan. So don't worry about the hurricanes - the worst you'll probably see is one of New Orleans' infamous ten-minute-typhoon!
