A-

Sociology Major

The Sociology program is a great major to have because as one professor loves to point out, it literally pertains to pretty much anything in life. The department offers diverse course options, from Criminology to Gender Inequalities to Social Development in Latin America. This major allows you to learn about people-on an individual and societal level- without the science/experimental approach of a Psychology major, though the two compliment each other nicely. Every professor in the department is well educated, friendly, helpful and approachable, and they all come from differing background experiences. Several of the profs are in their late 40's-50's, so I expect new faculty will be replacing them within the next few years. The department likes to have challenging classes, and a downside is that several of the profs take it upon themselves to fight grade inflation-meaning they only give out a certain number of A's per course. I have loved being a Sociology major because I love figuring out how people tick; why they do what they do. My classes frequently relate to my other, non-sociology classes in fascinating links, and I can apply a vast amount of what I've learned from the 4 Sociology classes I've taken to much of my daily life. My favorite Sociology class has been Gender Inequalities, but I also liked Self and Society a lot.

Local Atmosphere at Gettysburg College

B+

College Atmosphere in and Around College

Gettysburg is a small school in a not very big town. After two years, I recognize about 1/3 of the people I pass around campus, though I don't know many of their names. The campus is friendly-people will smile and say hi and hold doors for you. Theft is rarely and issue. However, as a small school, the campus is often cliquey. The Greek scene is HUGE on campus. If you don't like to drink/party, sometimes it is hard to find something to do on Thursday-Saturday nights, though the Campus Activities Board (CAB)often has activities planned for non-frat party fun. If you're not into partying, aside from the CAB activities, there are 2 movie theaters in the area, the Majestic Theatre showing indie films/documentaries, art/music exhibits, friends often hang out in each others rooms, walk through town, go to the Gettysburg tourist attractions like Ghost Tours in the fall. D.C., Philadelphia, and Baltimore are fairly close to go visit for a day or weekend. Gettysburg residents seem to be split in their views toward the college students. Many do not like the college because of the partying. Most think we are all rich and snobby (we aren't). The Gettysburg Outlets provide good shopping and there are also Walmart, CVS, RiteAid, and Kennie's Grocery for college necessities. The campus is pretty safe, campus security is always patrolling.

Off-Campus Housing at Gettysburg College

B

Theme Housing Anyone?

Most students live on campus, but theme-housing is popular. Join an existing theme house, like Peace House, or petition the college to create one of your own. The college is located on the side of the town, and the townspeople are used to college students renting apartments/houses, so they are not hard to find. All are within walking distance, parking may or may not sometimes be an issue.
