Soft on the Outside, but Tough on the Inside.
The University of Iowa is known for it's nightlife. Downtown bars are always at arm's length, so naturally the area police have their guards up when it comes to cracking down on underage drinking and over consumption. That being said, there are only a handful of cops and a lot of bars. This can make it quite easy to skirt the laws. Do beware, the cops will take no pity if you do get caught. The University rules aren't quite as lax. The professors and administrators have no time for the slightest incling of plagarism or cheating of any kind. On-campus housing also has strict regulations on residence guests and absolutely no tolerance for drugs or alcohol. In recent years, they have made it a standard that if a student is caught with drugs of any kind it can severly hinder their opportunity to receive financial aid.

When Walking in Three Feet of Snow Is Not and Option
Transportation in the warm months for the University of Iowa is fabulous. Students are always out walking, bicycling, jogging, or skateboarding. For people who live close to downtown, getting to class is a snap weather permitting. For other students whoe commute in, it can still be quite easy but of course, more time consuming. Campus buses run daily to different neighborhoods and are very prompt and reliable. The winter months on campus can be a different story. When the snow hits, buses fill up fast, walking isn't an option for most, and with the time you spend waiting for a bus outside, you could lose a finger to frostbite. I reccommend public transit in fall and spring, and having a car or a good friend with one for the winter months.

Please Do Not Let It Snow
Iowa has fickle weather. One day it could be 75 and sunny, the next 30 and snowing. Winters can be especially difficult. The University doesn't make a habbit of cancelling classes, so generally students are responsible for getting there at all cost, regardless of the three feet of snow. It can put a cramp on parking and for the first few weeks while everyone is adjusting, it can cause some lateness. Spring and summer however, are the exact opposite. When the weather returns to normal the city comes to life. It is a wonderfully positive experience when everyone isout enjoying the weather.
