Health & Safety at Colorado College

How Safe I Feel on Campus

The campus at Colorado College is a very tight-knit community. You don't ever have to worry about your stuff being stolen if you leave it out at the library or sitting at your table in the dining room. I longboard, and I leave my longboard outside the dining hall without any threat of it being stolen. The campus safety men and women are very helpful, and instead of being focused about busting up parties or getting you in trouble, they really are primarily concerned about your safety.

Weather at Colorado College

It's Colorado, of Course It Snows, but It's Beautiful

If you don't like the cold or snow, this isn't the place for you, but it isn't stereotypical—snowing all the time—either. There are plenty of warm days, and even when it's snowing it's mostly sunny. Plus, we're right in the foothills of the Rockies, and they're absolutely gorgeous after a fresh-fallen snow.

Overall Experience at Colorado College

A+

I Wouldn't Go Anywhere Else

CC is amazing. The block plan isn't for everyone, but I love it. The class sizes are always under thirty students, and they're really intense because you learn everything you would in a semester class in 3.5 weeks. The great thing about it, though, is that it allows for a lot of travel and field trips. The professors are very accessible; your class is the only class they teach during that block. The best thing about the block plan is the block breaks; after each class is completed you have a four day weekend where you can going skiing or go on a school-sponsored trip, whatever you want to do.

Comparison of the Underclassmen Dorms

There are three underclassmen dorms on campus: Mathias, Slocum, and Loomis. Each has a very different atmosphere. Mathias is notorious on campus. People are always hanging out outside, playing loud music, and just being rowdy in general. It's great, though, because the campus mini grocery store is located on the first floor. It also has a very nice kitchen. Loomis is decent because it has kitchens on each floor, and the RLC is awesome, but the laundry is in the basement, and it has the smallest rooms. Its location is the best, though, because it's closest to the mountains, allowing for the best views, and it's closest to the dining halls. Slocum is probably the best of the three because even though it's social, it's quieter than Mathias. It also has the biggest rooms with the highest ceilings, and it has laundry on every floor. It's also closer to most things on campus than Mathias is.

Drug Safety at Colorado College

A

Lots of People Smoke Weed, and House Parties Are Common

In my opinion, the drug scene is perfect at Colorado College. I don't personally use, and I think that's the case with most people on campus. But, I'm sure it's possible to get ahold of drugs if you want them. Weed is especially easy to come by, and even though it's "not permitted" a lot of people smoke in their rooms or even outside. You will at least get written up, though, if you're caught. I really like the college's policy on alcohol. You're not allowed to drink in the hallway, but you're allowed to have two open beers per person in your room. Depending on your RA, you may or may not get written up for drinking games or drinking in the hall way. They're usually pretty relaxed if your respectful. Off-campus parties are especially nice because the local police are very chill; they never give out tickets when they bust parties unless someone's especially disrespectful or is carrying an open container on the street.

Parking at Colorado College

C+

Eh...

I don't personally have a car because freshman aren't allowed to, but I've heard the parking permits are expensive. I've also heard that they're pretty harsh with giving out tickets if you don't have a permit and you're parked on campus. You don't absolutely need a car, but it's best to have one so you can go wherever you want on block breaks, and Colorado Springs is a large city with lots of sprawl if you need to run errands off campus somewhere.

Off-Campus Dining at Colorado College

A

Best Places to Check Out

I would give the off-campus dining an A+ because I love the atmospheres the various restaurants have, but they don't usually give student discounts, and the food can be kind of expensive for the student budget. I highly recommend Wooglin's Deli and Poor Richard's for cafe-style food. For good sushi, I recommend Fujiyama. For cheap, tasty pizza, check out Boriello Brother's. Lastly, to finish off your delicious meal stop by Josh & John's for a tasty ice cream treat... best ice cream you'll ever have!

D1 Hockey, but No Men's Football Team

Coming from a state where football is huge, it's weird coming to a school with no football team, but soccer and hockey make up for it. Our hockey team is especially good, one of our few D1 teams, and is nationally ranked. Intramural sports are especially popular here, if you're not able to join a varsity team.

Nightlife at Colorado College

Bring Your Costumes

Not a lot of CC students bother hitting up clubs or bars because the off-campus parties here are great. You never have to worry about trouble from the cops, unless you're doing something stupid like carrying an open container from party to party or publicly urinating, etc. The off-campus parties are especially great because of the free alcohol and wacky themes. Almost every party has some kind of theme, ranging from "CEO's & Office Ho's" to "Nickelodeon" to "Ski Bums" . . . anything you can think of, really.

Computers at Colorado College

B-

Network Reliability and Speed

Most of the time, the network works just fine, but depending where you are on campus, network coverage can be spotty and slow. It's also a pain because every time you go to print something you have to reconnect to the network printer you have to print from, or at least in my case.

Facilities at Colorado College

B+

General Campus Aesthetics

While some of the buildings are old and beautiful on the outside, others were built in the sixties and seventies and have a nasty, drab, boxy look to them. Mostly, though, the campus is charming, and it's made even better by the view of the Rocky Mountains, specifically Pike's Peak, which overlooks the campus.

Inside Scoop at Colorado College

Block Plan

It's very rare to come across a school that works on the block plan instead of a semester schedule. We still have four classes a semester, but instead of taking all four at the same time for the duration of the full semester, we take one class at a time, each class lasting 3.5 weeks. At the end of the 3.5 week class, we have block break - basically, a four day weekend. This makes classes really, really intense, and isn't meant for everyone, but I love it. It allows for students to be completely focused on the one subject, and it gives more opportunities for field-trips and hands-on experiences in classes. Your professor also only has one class at a time, so he or she is very focused on your personal needs; classes are usually 25 students or less.
