Fairly Safe... Depending on Where
If you're on campus closer to 12th, you want to travel in groups, especially at night. There was a rape in the area of a Belmont student as well as a few assaults. Bikes frequently get stolen so be sure to get your bike registered with the school and with a LOCK. Other than that you could practically sleep on campus in the quad and not worry about getting pick pocketed or anything. Ive left things in the computer lab and the library that were very valuable and they were always right where I left them originally, even if HOURS had passed! The students here aren't the danger, really just residents on the the side that's closer to 65.

Student Housing
My freshman year I lived in Maple and it was very nice, two bedrooms joined by a bathroom. Two sinks, a toilet, a shower, outlets, 100 speed cable internet, two beds in each room, two wardrobes, two desks, two chairs, two dressers. Everything is close. I heard Maddox was not so great, but other than that all of my peers seemed satisfied. Try to get off campus housing though because they are incredibly strict about alcohol and visitation with the opposite sex in your dorm rooms. Living off-campus can be much MUCH cheaper than living on campus and can allow you to live more freely. Also, if you're a musician, it may be best to move off-campus so you can have unlimited practice time.

What I Know About Off-Campus Living
I've lived in two different apartments off campus: Westmont Apartments and Howe-Garden Apartments. The first is off of West End, the other in East Nashville where I currently live. The closer you want to live to Belmont, the pricier it will be whereas East Nashville has fairly low rent. The drawback of living in East Nashville is it's a bit farther off, so instead of rolling out of bed and walking to class ten minutes before it starts, you'll have to get up maybe an hour or so before your class starts and be out the door, on the road 20 minutes before class time so you can get there in time to find a parking spot. Even though its some hassle, its worth the $350 I save every month! Also, roommates is absolutely the way to go with saving money, and I've known some people get great deals by renting out a house and making every possible room a bedroom. Belmont also has a housing finder link on their website that is extremely helpful.
