Lewis & Clark College Campus Housing had a new discussion posted by chizabel

What housing do sophomore students generally live in?

It depends. There are a lot of sophomores living in the new dorm (Holmes). It is rare that sophomores live in the apartments or off campus, but it does happen. Really though, there are sophomores in every dorm.

There are sophomores in every dorm, but some try to get into dorms like Hartzfeld, Holmes, or the Apartments. Platt-Howard has the least amount of sophomores, I heard.

what's the music scene like? Are there a lot of music/concert venues for local bands and the like?

Once in a while we have a set of bands that play at a music lounge.

Not really anything. Occasionally a band that no one has ever heard of will play in the cafe's. The acoustics will suck so they sound to loud and awful.

There is the Tacoma dome, but most people make the trek to Seattle

Yeah! There are some great local bands that have shows every once in a while, but there is also a huge music scene in Seattle. It is not uncommon to head up to Seattle for a weekend to experience some music or go to a concert. There is also Bumbershoot which happens in August (right at the beginning of the year), which is basically the Coachella of Seattle.

You can find the HUGE music scene in seattle, which is only a short drive away.

I'm an Atheist (or more leaning toward agnostic I suppose). I respect the religions of others - I went to a private school when I was younger and I have friends who are very religious, and my father is Christian Catholic, but I don't participate in religious activities/worship/discussion myself. Would I feel out of place in this community?

No, not at all. There are religious things that happen on campus, but you don't have to go to any of them. There's a really diverse mix of people here. Honestly, I feel more out of place being a Christian in this community than some of my Atheist friends do. :P

thanks so much! someone who visited the school once told me I would feel out of place as an atheist, so it's nice to hear something different from an actual student.

You'd be able to find a good community for you. You just have to be willing to get out and find the people you want to be around (: being an Atheist doesn't make much of a difference to that!

I dont think so, Seattle U is really open to people of all faiths or no faith, unlike at some other schools, they dont try to convert people here. The only thing I can think of that an Athiest of Agnostic might have difficulty with is the fact we have to take 5 religion related classes (intro philosophy, philosophy of the person, a christianity, world religion and ethics), however, you seem like a really open person who is willing to learn about other faiths so it shouldnt be a problem.

I'm a freshman applying as a transfer student for my sophomore year. What do you think the likelihood of my acceptance is? I'm a journalism/anthropology major, 3.3 GPA but doing extracurricular volunteer activities (my GPA was brought down because of a C+ in Statistics, other than that my grades were B+ and A's). Do you know of anyone who has transferred between freshman and sophomore year or is that rare/unlikely?

Transferring between freshman and sophomore year is pretty likely at Lewis & Clark. People are super accepting of you, and are open to new friendships

What kind of questions do they ask at admissions interviews? I have a transfer interview next month and I'm trying to prepare myself best I can.

Usually they just start by asking you about yourself: your interests, your friends/family, your school (I guess in your case, why you are transferring), your favorite subjects, difficulties you've had through school, successes you've had through school, and why you want to attend that college. They are really self-directed. :)

thank you so much!!

Lewis & Clark College Off-Campus Housing had a new discussion posted by chizabel

does L&C offer services to help find off-campus housing and roommates?

As far as I am aware, LC does not offer these services.

Though there are lots of posters and signs for people asking for roommates.

is the small size of the school a bit socially discouraging? a friend of mine goes to Dominican University in Marin, CA and it only has about 1500 students; she says it doesn't feel much different than high school when it comes to social interactions. does it seem any bit 'click'-y, or difficult to meet new people after a certain point? is there much interaction with PSU and UoP?

Lewis & Clark is generally acknowledged to be "clique-y". For the first few weeks you can sit anywhere, but groups form quickly, and romantic relations are everyone's business. The social interactions do feel like high school, except more high school than my actual high school. There is literally no interaction with PSU or UoP. Lewis and Clark has a reputation as the 'rich kids' or a 'party school' (the second isn't really true at all), and it is pretty isolated. This is my personal experience and that of many people I have talked to here. I am transferring out next year, along with my roommate, my next door neighbor, and two other people on my floor, and my dorm only has 30 people.

Not a lot of interaction with outside colleges that I know of but I love the small school aspect, always ways to meet new people

I love this campus, love Portland, love the idea of this school. I don't like how small it is - does it feel like high school size-wise or do you still get the college vibe?

You definitely bump into people on a regular basis- but to me, it seems very warm and friendly. Honestly, if you're worried that it might be too small for your taste, then it might be. I would suggest taking a tour if you're really invested in the idea of coming here! And it definitely doesn't feel like high school, but that's not really because of the size- more the freedom and academics =)

It's nothing like high school for me. Considering dorm life, separate buildings for all departments, and a reasonably large campus (that is also beautiful and scenic), it is definitely not like high school.

On-campus employment at Chico State

My older brother attends UCSD and there are a lot of opportunities for on-campus student employment there - i.e. working at the student store, running radio stations, etc. I was curious as to if there are many on-campus employment opportunities at Chico State and if so, can incoming freshman apply for jobs easily?

There are a lot of jobs offered on the campus. The bookstore hires students as well as the student store. There are also many jobs offered working for the school in different ways. You shouldn't have a problem getting one!

yes we have work study

Yes.

I would say that there are job opportunities out there. You just have to know where to look. The CSU Chico website helps too.

Yes. There is an office in the Student Services building as well as place on the Chico State website that helps students get jobs on campus or right around campus.

I have applied for a couple of jobs, but haven't heard anything. It is a small school with more job cuts, so it is more who you know to get jobs on campus.

There are plenty of job opportunities here on campus, for example student/book store, dining halls, student assistants, etc. There is a Student Employment Center that can assist you in finding jobs.

NO! I have applied for a dozen jobs in the year that I have been here and I am a grad student. I haven't even received an interview. It must be who you know and jobs are on the decline here.

CSU Chico Social Life?

I'm currently looking at all of my college options and I'm very iffy about Chico. I know it's improved a lot academically and it's actually a very good school education wise but I'm more concerned about the social life. I have no problem at all with partying - I'm in high school so certainly I'm involved in it/around it often. I usually don't drink more than say once a month though. The social life aspect of college is important to me because I want to go to a school with people I fit in with and where I feel comfortable. Like I said I'm not opposed to drinking but I'm more into things like hiking, art, reading, bike riding, sports, blablabla. I've always been the friend of that one "drunk bitch" at a party who holds back their hair and calms them down while they cry and I don't necessarily want to get myself back in that spot in college and I know I'm susceptible to being that person. So Chico students what are your opinions on the social aspect?

Chico is a big party school, although it is not everyone does. It is up to you and your friends whether or not you go out and drink. I think being the friend of the "drunk bitch" could happen anywhere. With that said, there is a lot of activities that you can be involved in. There is Bidwell park, a very big national or state park that you can hike and swim at. Everyone has a bike and you can bike anywhere. There are intermearal sports teams and different opportunities to be involved in art. The social aspect is what you make of it.

I believe that Chico is so diverse you can find a lot of people who share your lifestyle, no matter what the lifestyle is. I had always heard that Chico was a "party school" but that is a choice, not a requirement. The dorm scene has so many activities, there is a new rec center that provides so many different activities, and the town is so close to so many outdoor activities I believe you would love Chico.

Chico State is a great social experience, everyone is super outgoing and friendly. There is a lot of partying that goes on hand in hand with alcohol but it just depends the people you choose to hang around with. If the outdoors and arts are something you are interested in than there are many clubs that would be more than happy to have you join. Chico state tends to have a lot of activities specially when it comes to the outdoors and arts.

Chico is the place if you enjoy hiking, biking and outdoorsy stuff. There's a mix of people here so finding people to fit in with should not be a problem at all.

There is a lot to do in chico besides drink. We have beautiful rivers and parks. Lots of cubs on campus and fun activities.

Chico is no more a big party school than anywhere else. It all depends on the friends you keep. Some are heavily involved in drinking and partying while others are more about the outdoors or clubs. Chico has a place for everyone.

Chico is not diverse, unless you are from a small town. The university cowtows to Greek life, but surprisingly they suspended all of them last semester, because some guy died due to alcohol poisoning on his 21st birthday. You will be disgusted to see how they party here on Cesar Chavez Day.

You will find people who are into the same things you are. Just keep a look out and you'll see what a good choice Chico State is. Cost of living is one of the cheapest in the state, and with all there is to do around here you'll love that. Haha. It's only a party school if you let it be only a party school.
