Freshman Dorms: Eastway

Living in Eastway my freshman year was the best living option for me! Eastway is the freshman dorm on campus and a completely fun, well-rounded environment. I met so many good friends who were outside of my major; this gave me choices of people to hang out with which was always nice if I needed a break from certain friends. Although Eastway isn't the most updated dorm on campus it was well worth always knowing about activities on campus and meeting new people. Additionally, Eastway has a cafeteria and market located in its hub so food was super convenient. I highly recommend living in Eastway to any incoming Kent State freshman!

Health & Safety at Kent State University

B-

Very Safe

Kent State's campus is very safe. Yes there has been crime in the past but it is a large university and things happen. I often walk back to my dorm late at night and have never felt unsafe. Campus security offers escorts which is a nice comfort. Kent State as well as Kent police are always at hand if any trouble arises.

Academics at Kent State University

A

Great Environment to Study

I am an architecture student here at Kent State University which by default means I am always working on school work. Kent State offers many options in terms of places to study. Our Main Library recently lengthened their hours of operation to 24/5! Besides the library there are many places to find a quiet and comfortable place to study. In terms of during class, academics are excellent here; professors are there to help and if you have a large lecture class they have flexible office hours.

Off-Campus Dining at Kent State University

B+

Lots of Choices!

Kent is a very nice town and offers a variety of off-campus restaurants. There are a sprinkling of fast-food places along Route 59 just next to campus: Five Guys, Wendy's, Continental Grill, Taco Bell, etc. Downtown offers an even bigger variety! There's Ray's place which is a local favorite, Water Street Tavern/Cajun Dave's is another favorite, Taco Tantos is a fun Mexican create-your own food place, the Pufferbelly is great for family dinners, Franklin St. Deli is a delicious choice for homemade sandwiches. Everything is reasonably priced for the excellent food you get!

Local Atmosphere at Kent State University

Kent - Such a Nice Town

Kent is a wonderful little town that offers a lot of different things for students and locals to do. If you want a break from studying to just enjoy the spring and fall weather you can go down to the Cuyahoga River were there is a nice trail along the water. Acorn Alley, just off of Main Street, is a fun place to do a little shopping and enjoy some ice cream at the Arctic Squirrel or lunch/dinner at Pita Pit or the sushi restaurant. There are plenty of great bars downtown for those of you who are 21. Music is not a shortage here in Kent; there is the Kent Stage which always has concerts going on. Every year the University and the Kent Stage host the Folk Festival too. Scribbles is another great downtown place; a coffee shop with a local feel and great treats and drinks!

Off-Campus Housing at Kent State University

B-

Many Apartments

There are many apartments and houses to rent off-campus and more are being built! Sometimes the apartments are further from campus and a car would be nice but the PARTA bus system does service most of the apartment complexes that are far away. Costs are relative and sometimes high but living off-campus is a great experience. The Commuter and Off-Campus Student Organization (COSO) provides great information and services for students interested in living off-campus.

Majors at Kent State University

Architecture

Admission into the College of Architecture and Environmental Design is competitive...but so worth it. As a nationally ranked architectural school the requirements are high and acceptance is selective. In terms of the actual process, I encountered nothing out of the ordinary from any of the other five universities to which I applied.
