Athletics at Macalester College

B-

Mac Athletics

I am not an athlete, but the teams seem to have fun and work hard together. People often complain that athletes stick together, but I think this a product of preseason and practice schedules. I am friends with athletes who are incredible smart, hardworking and well rounded people and want to break out of the athletic bubble. Athletic events are unfortunately not well attended, but it's fun to go and cheer on your friends, even if they lose.

Nightlife at Macalester College

B

Sigh

Nightlight at Macalester is generally lacking, but then again I am from a big city where we were running wild since we were fourteen. I love that not everyone at Macalester is into partying, and there is no pressure to drink, even if you do go out. People put schoolwork over partying, which I find refreshing and encouraging. It is not unlikely to go out on Friday and then stay in on Saturday for a study party with friends. But we aren't total nerds - there are dorm parties, off campus house parties and well attended school sponsored events to get your mind off homework for the night. Off campus parties are the way to go and it's nice that the school is small enough that you will know most people in attendance (although this can be problematic..) People go into the city for clubbing, the quality of which varies on the event and venue.

Diversity at Macalester College

A

Diversity at Macalester

Diversity at Macalester is contended. While it is true that racial diversity is lacking, geographic diversity is incredible. It has been invaluable to my education to live and work with people from across the country and across the world. Learning about the exotic lifestyles of my peers from Nashville AND Nigeria, Seattle AND Senegal, Florida AND France, has been absolutely amazing. Learning about everyone's education, upbringing, family and culture is so enlightening and fun. Whether seeing cultural dance and music at the MIO showcase or eating ethiopian food at the Club Afrika! annual dinner, there is always an opportunity to learn from your peers at Macalester.
